12-Step Meetings Near Olympia, WA

When it comes to overcoming addiction and maintaining sobriety in the long-term, few community resources are quite as valuable as local support groups. And one of the most widely available types of support groups is 12-step meetings.

These groups are populated by fellow recovering addicts and provide an essential form of motivational and emotional support that many substance abusers simply don’t have in their lives.

NULL

As the name implies, 12-step groups are built on the foundational 12 steps of recovery developed in Alcoholics Anonymous, the very first 12-step group created in 1935.

These steps have since been applied to numerous other types of addictions besides alcohol. The most notable offshoots that use these 12 steps as their core for recovery are Narcotics Anonymous and Al-Anon (for family members and friends). However, there are plenty of other 12-step groups that have come about over the years, including:

While 12-step groups are numerous and varied, one of the best aspects of these sources of support is that it’s 100% free to attend. Members aren’t expected to fund the group in any way and added to that, groups are not affiliated with any government, religion, or cause – outside of helping people achieve sobriety that is.

And best of all, 12-step groups are actually backed up by science to help support recovery. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) even lists this type of therapy as one of their 8 evidence-based behavioral therapies.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

When most people think of 12-step support groups, they imagine Alcoholics Anonymous or AA. And it shouldn’t come as any surprise that AA is so widely known – it’s one of the largest support groups in the entire world.

In fact, since its founding in Akron, Ohio in 1935, AA has grown from just two members to having almost 2.1 million active members around the world. Plus, there are well over 120 thousand different groups too.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Sponsorship is a key part of Alcoholics Anonymous (and other 12-step groups). Sponsorship is a type of mentorship program, where more experienced AA members help keep others accountable, responsible, and – most importantly – sober.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a 100% free support group that’s widely available across the country and the world. And it can be a truly life-changing experience when done right.

Thankfully, there are plenty of AA meetings to choose from in Olympia, Washington.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

The second most well-known 12-step group, Narcotics Anonymous or NA isn't quite as big as AA, but it's still more sizable than most other support groups.

Founded in 1953, NA has since grown to more than 67 thousand different weekly meetings in 139 countries around the world.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

And rather than focusing on a single substance of abuse like alcohol, Narcotics Anonymous aims to help addicts of all kinds, whether the substance of abuse is heroin, cocaine, marijuana, or even booze itself. NA is unique in that it doesn’t make a distinction in how it approaches addiction for different drugs.

The only prerequisite for NA members is that they have a desire to get control over their addiction and achieve sobriety.

Like Alcoholics Anonymous, there are a wide variety of NA meetings across the State of Washington.

And within Olympia itself, there are plenty of groups for recovering addicts to choose from. The information for each of these meetings is listed below.

Al-Anon for Family & Friends

While the consequences of substance abuse can be devastating for the addict themselves (legal problems, poverty, severe organ damage, etc.), they aren’t the only ones hurt by an addiction.

Friends, family members, classmates, coworkers – all can be and often are negatively impacted by an individual’s addiction.

Al-Anon for Family & Friends

For some, it might be a lack of responsibility that leads to not being able to fulfill certain obligations. For others, it might be emotional abuse, alienation, codependency, and so much more.

But no matter what the damage is, one thing always remains true – the people around addicts need support too.

And for them, there are groups like Al-Anon. This group focuses on healing the damage of addiction inflicted upon others. It can also provide guidance in helping members better handle a friend or loved one falling prey to the cycle of addiction.

Some things members might learn about in these meetings include:

In the end, Al-Anon is an invaluable resource for anyone who has been impacted by another person's habitual drinking.

While Al-Anon can be incredibly important for those who have been hurt by a friend or loved one’s drinking, there aren’t as many meetings to choose from compared to AA and NA. That being said, there are still a number of groups that take place nearby.

Below are the closest Al-Anon meetings to Olympia, Washington ordered from closest to furthest.

Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Resources in Olympia, WA

12-Step Alternatives

12-step groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are extremely well-known across the country and around the world. But even still, they are far from the only choice when it comes to getting life-changing addiction support that’s both free and scientifically proven to help support recovery.

12-Step Alternatives

Whether it’s because of conflicting ideas about the nature of recovery, a disagreement on the spirituality that should be involved, or even just the time or location of 12-step meetings that makes them less attractive, most cities across America have a number of other addiction support groups to choose from.

Three of the most popular are SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Moderation Management.

Evidence-based, not-for-profit, and delivering self-help strategies just like 12-step groups, SMART Recovery is without a doubt one of the best alternatives to groups like AA and NA.

While 12-step groups tend to teach powerlessness in the face of addiction, SMART Recovery instead focuses on the self-empowerment. They present common sense and scientifically proven strategies for abstaining from drugs or alcohol and developing a healthier, more positive lifestyle.

Rather than being conducted by community members like with 12-step groups, SMART Recovery sessions are led by a certified instructor. This provides a more structured approach to lessons and ensures only verified information is taught along the way.

One of the biggest problems that people tend to have with 12-step groups is the perceived spirituality of these meetings. Mention of a “God” and a “spiritual awakening” appear in 7 of the 12 steps.

And many believe that atheism and agnosticism simply do not mesh with these programs – it’s worth mentioning that the organizations officially welcome members of any belief system.

Even still, outspokenly non-spiritual support groups like Secular Organizations for Sobriety (S.O.S.) aim to offer a religion-free approach to recovery that many believe 12-step groups simply can’t provide.

These groups are autonomous, non-professional, and local just like 12-step meetings. And S.O.S. has been helping individuals overcome their addictions for more than 30 years.

Not everyone with a drinking problem is necessarily an alcoholic. And in fact, many problem drinkers may simply need to take a step back, reexamine their lives, and learn to better control their alcohol consumption without giving it up entirely.

While confusing alcohol addiction with abuse can be a dangerous game, one organization, in particular, helps those who haven't developed a full-blown addiction to alcohol but still want to control their drinking. And that's Moderation Management or MM.

Unlike abstinence-based organizations, MM teaches members how to limit their drinking to non-dangerous levels before it’s too late. And while they aren’t nearly as popular as other self-help groups, they tap into a relatively underserved niche that needs help just like everyone else.

In today’s busy world, not everyone will be able to attend in-person addiction support meetings as much as they’d like to. Maybe their schedules don’t match up, transportation options are limited, or life is just too hectic to find the time.

No matter what the reason, online addiction support groups offer far greater flexibility and accessibility for anyone looking for recovery support.

Below are some of the best places to start when it comes to finding an online support group that’s right for you.

Drug & Alcohol Detox Programs Near Olympia, WA

Olympia is home to many drug detox programs. These programs help addicts flush the toxins out of their system and take the first step toward sobriety. They provide medical care and attention as the addict goes through withdrawal symptoms.

As you may know, withdrawal symptoms are notoriously unpleasant. When someone tries to quit using drugs after a long time, their body goes into shock. They experience a range of symptoms from vomiting and diarrhea to anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. In some cases, these symptoms can be dangerous.

Therefore, it’s always best to detox in a professional treatment center. While some people are able to quit cold turkey on their own, this approach doesn’t work for everyone. Many cold-turkey quitters end up relapsing when the symptoms get too uncomfortable.

In detox, you’ll withdraw under the supervision of medical professionals. These doctors will administer medication to ease your symptoms, and ensure that you have no access to drugs. If your addiction is severe enough, they may have you taper off the drug slowly in order to minimize the pain of withdrawal.

Ultimately, checking into a professional drug detox program will increase your chances of quitting successfully.

We want to help you quit drinking. Learn more about our Alcohol Detox program and start getting sober today!

Every detox program is different. Our alcohol detox program, for example, lasts 28 days. This program is designed to help alcoholics wean off booze in the safest, most comfortable manner.

However, some programs are longer, and others are shorter.

Usually, the length of detox depends on the addict. Those in good health typically have an easier time metabolizing drugs. So, they are able to flush the toxins out of their system faster than an unhealthy person.

A few other factors can impact the withdrawal timeline. These factors include:

Drugs used: Every drug has a different withdrawal timeline. Some drugs live in the body longer than others, making it harder for the user to detox.

Amount used: Addicts who use large amounts of drugs have a harder time detoxing. Many substances create byproducts in the liver that are difficult for the body to metabolize. The more a person uses, the more byproducts build up in their body.

Length of addiction: People who’ve maintained an addiction for years are typically more dependent than newer addicts. Their body has been dependent on the drug for a longer time, and therefore has a harder time acclimating to sobriety.

Type of addiction: There are many types of addicts. Some people are binge drinkers, while others are chronic users. Bingers may have an easier time detoxing, as they are accustomed to going long periods without using. Chronic users, on the other hand, often take longer to detox.

Once you complete detox, you have a number of options. Most people transfer directly to a drug or alcohol rehab program. Some of the rehab programs around Olympia offer both detox and rehab services. But, others specialize in one service. If you go through withdrawals in a specialized detox center, you should move to rehab ASAP to limit the risk of relapse.

Other people skip rehab and go back to normal life. This approach works for some, but not for everyone. If you decide to abstain from rehab, you should attend several 12- step meetings per day and find a sponsor immediately. This will help you stay on the right track as you work to stay sober.

Drug & Alcohol Rehab Programs Near Olympia, WA

In addition to detox programs, there are also several drug rehab programs around Olympia. These facilities help people transition from an addicted life to a sober one. They provide a variety of services including therapy, counseling, doctor visits, and more.

In rehab, addicts commit to several weeks of treatment. Each week, they undergo individual therapy, group therapy, stress-management courses, and more. These resources help them identify the roots of their addiction, and teach them how to cope with stress in a healthy way. Ultimately, rehab programs aim to help their patients move on to a happier, healthier life.

Remember:

Addiction is a two-part disease. It has a physical side and a psychological side. Detox helps addicts overcome the physical side effects of addiction, but rehab helps them deal with the emotional ones.

Not every addict goes to rehab. But, the ones who do have a much better chance of succeeding in sobriety.

The rehab programs around Olympia come in two distinct forms: inpatient programs and outpatient programs.

Inpatient rehab programs are what most people think of when they think about addiction treatment. These are the facilities where the addict moves in and lives at the treatment center for a few weeks. The patient shares meals with other patients and spends their days in therapy. At night, they exercise, read, and plan for the future.

Outpatient rehab programs are non-residential. Patients in these programs don’t live on-campus. Instead, they live at their own homes and report for treatment a few times per week. Some programs require 5-10 hours per week, while others require 30 or more.

Outpatient programs work best for busy people. They allow students, professionals, and parents to attend to outside responsibilities while getting sober. However, for outpatient rehab to work effectively, the patient must work to avoid relapse while off-campus. Those who are unable to abstain from drug use would benefit from an inpatient program.

Rehab has a reputation for being expensive. But that’s not always the case. There are many affordable treatment options out there.

A lot of churches and community groups offer free addiction treatment for local addicts. They run inpatient programs, outpatient resources, and more. These are valuable programs that aim to limit the amount of addiction in the community.

Unfortunately, many of these programs are overcrowded. Some of them have long waiting lists. So, not everyone who needs treatment is able to attend.

But, there are plenty of other options.

For example, some treatment centers accept insurance. This allows insured people to receive rehab treatment for little or no money. Therefore, if you subscribe to a health insurance plan, you are probably entitled to low-cost addiction treatment.

At Northpoint Washington, we work with a network of insurance companies to provide affordable treatment. If you subscribe to MHNet Behavioral Health Insurance or 6 Degrees Health Insurance, for example, you may be able to come to Northpoint for free!

Is your provider in our insurance network? Contact us to verify your insurance and find out if you’re entitled to free treatment!

Overdosing on Drugs or Alcohol

Among all the numerous and devastatingly harsh consequences of drug addiction, few are quite as destructive as an overdose.

Overdosing on drugs and/or alcohol can cause serious physical damage to internal organs like the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and the brain. It can even lead to permanent changes in how an individual acts, functions, and perceives the world around them.

And most notably, overdose can and often does lead to death. In fact, America’s rate of fatal overdoses has never been higher than it is today. Causing more than 72 thousand deaths in 2017 alone, overdoses are responsible for more deaths than vehicle accidents, gun violence, and even certain kinds of cancer.

Today, drug overdoses have actually become the #1 cause of death for Americans under the age of 50.

Signs of overdose

More than ever before, then, it’s vital to know both how to spot the signs of a drug or alcohol overdose and what to do to ensure the best chances of survival.

Not all overdoses are going to look the same for everyone. Individual physiology, genetics, general health, drug type, and more will all come into play in how an overdose physically and psychologically presents itself.

On top of that, many people tend to mix different drugs, complicating the process even further.

What to Do During an Overdose

Once you’ve identified the signs of an overdose, the very next step you take should be to call 9-1-1 immediately. Every second counts when it comes to an overdose. And that means that hesitating, even for a few minutes, can mean the difference between life and death.

What to Do During an Overdose

If you have to leave the victim to make the call, be sure to place them in the recovery position so that their airway remains clear.

After you’ve reached emergency services, they’ll likely dispatch an ambulance to your location. In the meantime, though, the operators on the other end of the line will help guide you through life-saving measures that will help ensure the absolute best outcome for the victim.

They may, for instance, advise you to:

  • Perform CPR
  • Induce vomiting
  • Rehydrate the victim

It’s important to listen to the operator and perform actions exactly how you’re instructed while you wait for the ambulance to arrive. Once it does, the emergency service workers will be able to administer a higher level of care and may even use overdose-combating medications like naloxone to reverse the toxic effects.

In most cases, the victim will be transported to a hospital or emergency room for more intensive care and observation.
