Alcohol and Drug Addiction Resources in Industrial District, WA

Industrial District, Washington Overdose, Support, & Treatment Addiction Resources

Industrial District is a popular neighborhood in Seattle above Georgetown and between North Beacon Hill and Harbor Island.

And like much of the rest of the area, it’s seen its fair share of problems with drug and alcohol addiction.

But unfortunately, many residents here continue to struggle with their substance abuse problem alone. And part of the problem is that they simply don’t know what kinds of addiction resources are located just right around the corner.

This comprehensive guide to addiction resources in the Industrial District, Washington takes a deep dive into these widely available sources of support. From overdose help and local support groups to professional treatment information, you’ll find everything you need to know about where to look for addiction help.

The Dangers of Overdosing

Addiction can be incredibly damaging to so many different aspects of a person’s life. It can ravage finances, sabotage career prospects, jeopardize relationships, and destroy so much more. But one of the most immediate risks of an addiction is that of an overdose.

Overdoses can lead to permanent health problems, sure, but the bigger risk is that of death.

In recent years overdose deaths have skyrocketed to unseen levels. Since 1999, they’ve grown by more than 316%. And in 2017 alone, more than 70 thousand Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses.

In fact, drug overdoses are now the number one killer of U.S. citizens under the age of 55.

That’s why today more than ever, it’s critical to know the various signs of an overdose as well as what to do to help treat one.

Not all drugs have the same overdose symptoms. And knowing how to spot each can make treating the problem easier.

Below are the most common overdose symptoms of the most widely-abused drugs today.

Prescription Opioids – These drugs can be quite helpful in treating pain in patients. But they’re also quite addictive. And when abused, they can be deadly too. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Cocaine – This club drug is both popular and dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on coke may include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – Despite it being legal, alcohol consumption can and does regularly lead to serious health problems. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Crystal Meth – Meth is a powerful stimulant that can hook an abuser incredibly quickly. Using it in excess can also very easily lead to an overdose. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Benzodiazepines – Also known as benzos, these drugs are used to treat conditions like depression and anxiety. And when they’re abused, they can end up being quite deadly. Here are some benzo overdose signs to watch out for.

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

HeroinPerhaps one of the most notorious illicit drugs, heroin is highly addictive and particularly dangerous. The signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

The key to treating a drug overdose is getting help, and getting help fast.

As such, if you notice the signs of an overdose, call 9-1-1 immediately.

The operators on the other end of the line will not only help you treat the victim, but they’ll also be able to send an ambulance to your location.

If you do have to leave the side of the victim, even for a moment, be sure to put them in what’s known as the recovery position. Doing so will only take a minute, and it can be a crucial step in preventing serious and life-threatening complications.

The operator will also likely ask you a range of questions to get a better handle on the situation. These questions may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What’s their current condition?
  • What drug caused the overdose and when was it last used?
  • Does the victim have a history of substance abuse?
  • Do they have a prescription for the drug?

Be sure to answer these questions honestly as lying about any information can have deadly consequences.

They may also instruct you to perform CPR or administer other lifesaving care measures.

Once the ambulance arrives, the EMTs on board will take over treating the victim. They may use specialized equipment or powerful medications like naloxone. They’ll also most likely transfer the victim to a hospital too.

Local Support Groups Near Industrial District, Washington

Willpower goes a long way when trying to overcome an addiction. It can help you push through the powerful cravings, avoid problematic triggers, and keep your eye on the prize – the freedom of sobriety rather than the enslavement of addiction.

But willpower alone is rarely enough to keep substance abusers from relapsing. And despite what some may say, addiction is a complex disease, not just a series of poor choices.

That’s why it’s so important to get the proper kind and amount of support during recovery. A strong support system can help users maintain motivation, keep check of their emotional states, and get help when they’re on the verge of relapsing.

Thankfully, there are a variety of local support groups in and around the Industrial District.

Perhaps the most well-known support group, Alcoholics Anonymous has helped literally millions of people overcome their drinking problem.

In fact, since its founding in 1935, it has grown to include more than 2.1 million members around the world.

Part of what makes AA so unique is its accessibility. Meetings are free to attend, membership is open to all, and groups can be found in nearly every region in the United States.

On top of that, AA uses the 12-step model, which is endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) itself.

And luckily, there are plenty of AA meetings taking place around the Industrial District every single day.

The 12-step model of AA is so helpful that it’s inspired a number of different offshoots that address various kinds of addiction. Narcotics Anonymous was one of the first of these offshoots.

Rather than dealing specifically with alcoholism, NA opens its doors to substance abusers of any kind. That means people struggling with a heroin, meth, or even alcohol problem are all welcome to attend these groups.

And like AA, meetings are free, anonymous, and widely available. Below are some of the closest.

Addicts themselves aren’t the only ones who are hurt by their substance abuse problem. And in fact, many times the friends, family members, and even coworkers of alcoholics just don’t get the kind of support that they need to stay happy, healthy, and functional.

Al-Anon is a 12-step group devoted specifically to helping these individuals get the support they need.

And like other 12-step groups, meetings are highly accessible and numerous in the Industrial District area.

It can be hard to open up to others in a support group. And this is especially true for young people when they’re surrounded only by others that are twice their age.

Alateen aims to solve this problem in particular. These meetings usually require members to be within a certain age range. That way, members feel more comfortable about sharing their own experiences and embracing the support of others along the way.

Meetings aren’t as easy to find as other 12-step groups. But even still, there are quite a few groups taking place nearby.

Alcoholism can cause long-lasting trauma for friends and family members. This is especially true for children of alcoholics. And that trauma can often persist well into adulthood, causing serious problems along the way.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is a 12-step group focused on helping these individuals in particular. And for many, it’s been a vital source of support and healing.

Whether it’s a packed schedule, broken down transportation, or even shame caused by the numerous stigmas surrounding addiction, there are plenty of reasons why someone may not be able to make it to an in-person meeting.

Luckily, there are online support groups to make finding support even easier. These groups may take place over email, chat rooms, or even via video teleconferencing. It just depends on the group.

Below are some places to start looking for an online support group for you.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

Support is an important part of any recovery program. And without it, many addicts simply will not be able to overcome cravings and remain sober in the long run. In fact, relapse rates for drug addicts range from 40 to 60% in many cases.

That’s where professional addiction programs come in. These programs use evidence-based strategies and treatments to help recovering addicts get clean and stay clean more consistently.

While higher recovery rates are some of the best benefits of choosing a professional program, there are quite a few more that some people may not consider. For example, a professional program also:

  • May offer special prescription medications used specifically to help treat addiction.
  • They usually provide around-the-clock medical monitoring – especially helpful during detoxification
  • They can connect patients with others in the same situation and build up a strong social support network that may last a lifetime.
  • Provides a range of amenities that make recovery far more comfortable.

A professional program is usually classified as either a detoxification program or a rehabilitation program. Some programs may contain both, too.

Detoxification is the first stage of a recovery program. It deals primarily with the uncomfortable side effects of quitting known as withdrawals. And for many, these withdrawals can be quite problematic. Some addicts even return to using simply to get some kind of relief from the symptoms. These withdrawals may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea

A professional detox program will make getting through the withdrawal process as quick, easy, and safe as possible.

Rehabilitation is the second phase, and it's focused on treating the long-term mental effects of addiction, rather than the immediate physical ones. By using one-on-one counseling, group talk, and behavioral therapies, these programs show patients how to get sober and stay clean.

There are two different types of rehab programs too.

InpatientThese programs are usually about 30 days long. And they offer the most intensive form of care. Patients in an inpatient program usually eat, sleep, and receive treatment all in the same centralized location. Think of it as a recovery retreat.

And while this type of treatment offers the best odds at long-term recovery, it can be quite disruptive to normal day-to-day life since going to work or school can be tough.

Outpatient – This type of program offers much more flexibility. Treatment sessions happen in the evenings for just a few hours, letting patients do what they want with their days and nights.

However, less intensive care also means a higher risk of relapse too.

For a higher level of care with the flexibility of outpatient, there are also intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) with treatment sessions that last longer and occur more frequently throughout the week.
