Guide to Addiction Resources in Maple Valley, WA

The nationwide problem of drug and alcohol addiction continues to grow with each passing year. And despite just how many Americans struggle with a substance use disorder (19.6 million), it can be an incredibly lonely and isolating disease.

But the battle of addiction doesn’t have to be fought alone. And in Maple Valley, Washington, there are plenty of addiction resources nearby to help substance abusers stay safe, find support, and get clean.

This comprehensive guide to these local addiction resources will cover overdose assistance, community support groups, educational opportunities, professional treatment, and more in the Maple Valley area.

Because addiction shouldn’t be a struggle you go through on your own. And these addiction resources can help.

The Serious Threat of Overdosing

The Serious Threat of Overdosing

Without a doubt, one of the most frightening effects of a substance abuse problem is the risk of overdosing.

If life-saving treatment isn’t administered in time, a drug or alcohol overdose can cause permanent brain and organ damage – and it might even result in death.

To make matters worse, fatal drug overdoses are sharply on the rise too. In 2017, an estimated 72 thousand Americans died from a drug overdose according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Nearly 30 thousand of those deaths were due to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. But deaths from other drugs like heroin, cocaine, and meth have spiked in recent years too.

That’s why it’s never been more important than it is today to know what to do in case of an overdose and how to spot the signs early on.

The very first step in treating an overdose (and often the most important one) is to contact emergency services as soon as you’ve identified the signs of an overdose. As such, hesitating or second-guessing can in fact be deadly in these situations. So don’t delay.

Call 9-1-1 immediately.

Once you’ve contacted emergency services, the experts on the other end of the line will be able to help in two vital ways. First, they can give you advice on how to treat the victim and even save their life. This might include administering CPR, inducing vomiting, or even giving them certain foods or medications.

Second, they can send an ambulance to your location. Once they arrive, they can treat the victim with overdose-reversing medications like naloxone and transfer them to a hospital or emergency room.

Calling 9-1-1 during an overdose is critical. But before that, you need to be able to actually recognize the symptoms before you can jump into action.

Below are some signs of an overdose to watch out for when it comes to the most commonly abused drugs today.

Prescription Opioids – A prescription opioid overdose usually presents the following symptoms:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Unresponsive to outside stimulus
  • Awake, but unable to talk
  • Breathing is very slow and shallow, erratic, or has stopped
  • For lighter skinned people, the skin tone turns bluish purple, for darker skinned people, it turns grayish or ashen.
  • Choking sounds, or a snore-like gurgling noise (sometimes called the “death rattle”)
  • Vomiting
  • Body is very limp
  • Face is very pale or clammy
  • Fingernails and lips turn blue or purplish black
  • Pulse (heartbeat) is slow, erratic, or not there at all

Heroin – A heroin overdose is typically characterized by these symptoms:

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing
  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips
  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines
  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Alcohol – Some signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for include:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

  • Difficulty breathing
  • High blood pressure
  • High body temperature
  • Hallucinations
  • Extreme agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Irregular heart rhythm

  • Slow reflexes
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Coma

Crystal Meth – Some of the symptoms to be on the lookout for when it comes to a crystal meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature

12-Step Meetings Around Maple Valley

When someone thinks about addiction support, they’re probably imagining a 12-step group. And with good reason – organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon are enormous, popular, and (most importantly) effective in helping addicts maintain sobriety.

In fact, 12-step groups are so helpful during recovery that they’re even one of the 8 evidence-based behavioral therapies listed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), one of the country’s leading authorities on addiction.

8 evidence-based behavioral therapies

These groups are all based on the core 12 principles of recovery first founded in Alcoholics Anonymous. And for many, they provide a clear, structured path to recovery that many other organizations just don’t have.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

Branching off of the 12-steps first used in AA, Narcotics Anonymous or NA aims to treat addictions of all types – from prescription pills and illicit drugs to even alcohol.

While not as old as AA, Narcotics Anonymous has been around since 1953 and has grown to almost 67 thousand groups in 139 countries around the world.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

The structure of these groups usually revolves around group therapy. On top of that, the sponsorship aspect plays a big role in recovery and is a great way to keep members accountable and supported as they maintain their sobriety.

There are plenty of Narcotics Anonymous groups within Washington State.

And for the residents of Maple Valley and the surrounding areas in particular, there are so many different options to choose from. Below are some of the closest ones.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

The original 12-step meeting, Alcoholics Anonymous or AA began in 1935 in Akron, Ohio.

Its current membership is estimated to be nearly 2.1 million, and it has over 120 thousand different groups worldwide.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Like other 12-step meetings, AA focuses on the healing power of group talk therapy. Members are encouraged to share their experiences with alcoholism, their current struggles, and their achievements. And in this sharing, members learn from the ups and downs of others while also exploring their own relationships with alcohol.

This program can be truly life-saving for some and is a perfect option for anyone looking for aftercare services to help them maintain sobriety post-treatment.

Given just how popular AA is, it isn’t much of a surprise that there are so many groups that hold sessions within Maple Valley itself. Have a look at the groups below for more information on these local AA chapters.

Besides the various physical health and financial pitfalls of addiction, substance abuse can also cause enormous damage to one aspect of an individual’s life in particular – their social life.

Whether it be friends or family members or even co-workers who are hurt by an individual's substance dependency, these individuals need support in order to heal as well. And for them, there's Al-Anon.

This 12-step support group helps those affected by another person’s addiction. They may cover topics like:

How to stop enabling a friend or family member

What are the signs of addiction?

What does an intervention entail?

Unfortunately, Al-Anon is not as widespread and popular as Alcoholics Anonymous or even Narcotics Anonymous. And that can make it a bit difficult to find a meeting that works well for you.

However, Maple Valley in particular has a number of meetings that take place nearby. Below are some of the closest, each less than 10 miles away.

Alternatives to 12-Step Support Groups

While the 12-step programs can be instrumental in recovery for some, they won’t always resonate with everyone going through recovery.

One problem in particular is that many people interpret these groups as being based on spirituality – a problem for individuals that don’t hold these same metaphysical beliefs. For them, the persistent mention of a “higher power” can be off-putting and alienating, even if atheists and agnostics are always welcome in these programs.

Alternatives to 12-Step Support Groups

Others may simply believe that the 12 steps themselves don’t get to the true root of addiction.

No matter the reason, anyone who doesn't feel that 12-step programs aren't for them still has plenty of alternatives to choose from. Many of these groups even follow the same structure as 12-step programs (i.e., community-led with a group therapy format).

Below are three of the most popular 12-step alternatives today, each with their own philosophy and appeal.

With meetings in numerous countries around the world, one of the most popular alternatives to 12-step meetings is SMART Recovery. This in-person support group uses evidence-based treatments and self-management strategies to help members cope with cravings, identify triggers, and ultimately gain more control over their substance abuse.

Where 12-step programs promote powerlessness in the face of addiction, SMART Recovery is about self-empowerment.

On top of that, these meetings are led by certified instructors rather than the community itself. This allows for a more structured approach to recovery and also ensures that only accurate, scientifically-supported information is shared with members.

You can find a SMART Recovery meeting nearby here.

Also known as S.O.S., Secular Organizations for Sobriety provides a non-religious alternative to 12-step groups. These groups have been helping people recover from alcohol, drug, and even food addictions for more than 30 years. They’re a legal 501(c)3 non-profit organization and regularly hold meetings across the country.

Not all problem drinkers are full-blown alcoholics. And in that same vein, not all problem drinkers need to become completely abstinent in order to get their substance abuse under control. For those who haven’t completely succumbed to alcoholism but still want to get a better handle on their drinking, there’s Moderation Management.

Moderation Management shows members how to control their drinking using self-management, balance, moderation, and personal responsibility.

Finding a community that nurtures recovery and supports an addict along their way to sobriety is absolutely critical to long-term success. Addiction very often is a disease of isolation. And without a strong social support network, kicking a substance use disorder can be near impossible on your own.

Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to attend in-person meetings as much as they’d like. Maybe their schedule is already packed to the gills with obligations. Or maybe they simply don’t have the means to travel to a nearby group.

Luckily, there are a host of online meetings that connect recovering addicts every single day. These groups take place in forums, over email, in real-time chatrooms, and even over the phone in some cases.

In the end, even if you’re geographically isolated from nearby groups, you can still interact with others just like you for support.

Professional Addiction Treatment Options Near Maple Valley

While education and support are crucial components of any recovery, most people will need a higher level of care to achieve long-term sobriety. That’s where professional treatment comes in.

Professional addiction treatment programs ensure that patients are equipped with the best tools and strategies to cope with cravings and prevent relapse down the line. On top of that, many of these programs also use certain medications to make kicking a drug habit even easier.

Plus, they’ll also be able to monitor the health of patients every step of the way, which is critical during the early stages of recovery.

And while there a few treatment centers within Maple Valley itself, it’s important not to confine your options solely to the town you live in. In fact, travelling for drug rehab can actually be one of the best ways to get the level of quality care you deserve.

Types of Treatment Available

Not all treatment programs offer the same services. And in order to find the one that meets your particular needs, it’s important to know the difference between these programs. Below are the four main program types you’ll likely run into during your search.

DetoxificationDetox is the first stage of treatment and may even be offered alongside an inpatient program. This stage is devoted to helping the body get used to functioning normally without the substance of abuse. However, it often comes along with some particularly uncomfortable physical and mental symptoms known as withdrawals.

A professional detox program helps patients push through the worst stages of withdrawal and helps prevent and treat any health complications that might come up along the way. After detox, patients move on to rehabilitation.

Inpatient RehabThis is the highest level of care when it comes to rehab programs. Patients are required to stay on the program campus at all times and undergo various forms of therapy throughout the day. A more controlled environment means recovering addicts are less likely to succumb to using again and will be more focused on their own individual recovery.

The downside of inpatient rehabs is that most patients won’t be able to go to work or school throughout the course of the program (about 30 days in most cases). And that can be quite disruptive to their normal daily lives. Added to that, these programs tend to be more expensive than other options as well.

Outpatient RehabilitationAn outpatient program provides more treatment flexibility while sacrificing the intensiveness of care. Patients in these programs usually attend therapy sessions several times a week in the evening. Sessions will typically only last several hours. As a result, patients are free to tend to normal daily obligations like school or work.

However, patients are also more exposed to the risk of relapse since they are free to do whatever they wish during the day. As a result, outpatient programs are best for patients with especially mild addictions.

These programs generally last around 3 months.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)This program is designed to offer the flexibility of an outpatient program and more intensive treatment like an inpatient one. Patients attend evening treatment sessions, but these usually last longer and take place more frequently throughout the week.

This type of program is great for those who need a more complete recovery program but don’t have the time to commit to an inpatient program.

The number one concern when it comes to choosing a rehab facility to partner with is finding one that meets your specific needs. Unfortunately, with so many options to choose from, that’s easier said than done.
