Guide to Addiction Resources in Davenport, WA

Davenport, Washington Overdose, Support, & Treatment Addiction Resources

Just a short drive away from Spokane and Lake Roosevelt, Davenport is a small, beautiful, and tight-knit community in western Washington.

Despite its size, though, Davenport is no stranger to more metropolitan problems like substance abuse and addiction. But unfortunately, the majority of residents in this idyllic town just don’t know where to turn to for help.

This guide to addiction resources in Davenport, Washington aims to point out some of the best resources in Davenport and the surrounding areas. We’ll look at what to do during an overdose, where to find local support groups, and how to find out more about the right professional treatment options for you.

Local Support Groups Near Davenport, Washington

Overcoming an addiction takes an enormous amount of determination. However, willpower alone is often not enough to keep someone from relapsing and falling victim to old bad habits. And that’s why it’s so important to develop a strong social support network during recovery.

And one of the best places to find the support that’s so vital is in local support groups. These groups are typically easy to find, free to attend, and open to anyone who wants to control their drug or alcohol use.

Below are just some of the closest support groups around Davenport.

Widely considered to be the most well-known support group in the world, Alcoholics Anonymous boasts global membership numbers of well over 2.1 million people.

Part of what makes this group so successful is the fact that they’re incredibly accessible. And in fact, most cities in the country are less than an hour away from a meeting (and many are far closer). Its model for recovery (called the 12-step model) is also endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse too.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many AA meetings happening nearby Davenport. The two closest are below.

The 12-step model is considered so successful that many groups have branched off of AA using this same model. And Narcotics Anonymous was one of the first to do so in 1953.

Rather than focusing on a single substance of abuse, though, NA opens its doors to substance addictions of all kinds, not just alcohol.

And like AA, meetings are free, open to all, and completely anonymous.

Below are just some of the closest NA meetings around Davenport, WA.

Many young people simply don’t feel comfortable opening up in normal Al-Anon meetings. But thanks to Alateen, they can still get the support they need to heal.

Alateen is strictly for young people, usually within the range of 10 to 20 years old. And by surrounding members with other people their own age, it allows for a more comfortable environment and a freer exchange of experiences and support.

There is only one Alateen meeting happening nearby, unfortunately. You can find its information below.

Similar to how AA has Al-Anon, so too does NA have Nar-Anon. And like its sister group, it caters to addictions of all kinds.

Growing up with an alcoholic parent or family member can be traumatic for many. And this trauma can often lead to serious problems that can end up lasting well into adulthood.

Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA is a 12-step group that focuses on helping these individuals in particular to lead happier, healthier lives and move past this trauma. And it’s been a vital source of healing for many.

There are quite a few ACoA meetings taking place nearby.

While 12-step support groups are without a doubt the most popular, this isn’t the only recovery model that’s been shown to be effective in promoting sobriety. And for those who have differing beliefs, this can come as welcome news.

One of the most successful 12-step alternatives is SMART Recovery. This non-spiritual group uses the latest in scientific evidence to give members real-world tools and strategies they can use to overcome cravings, identify triggers, and avoid relapsing.

There are a few SMART Recovery groups nearby. The closest is listed below.

There are plenty of reasons why someone may not be able to attend face-to-face support groups. It could be a hectic schedule, no transportation, or even just shame and embarrassment.

But no matter what the reason, online groups allow these individuals to get the support they need on their own terms.

Meetings can take place via email, chatrooms, or even video teleconferencing. Each group is different.

Below are a few places to start looking for a group that’s right for you.

The Dangers of Overdosing

Never before has a drug or alcohol addiction been quite as dangerous as it is today.

Thanks in large part to the opioid epidemic, the rate of drug overdose deaths has skyrocketed over the past two decades. From 1999 to 2017, yearly deaths from drugs rose by a whopping 316% up to more than 70 thousand deaths.

And when you add in the fact that alcohol poisoning kills 6 Americans every single day, it’s no wonder that substance abuse is now the #1 cause of death among Americans under the age of 55.

As a result, it’s never been more important to know how to spot the signs of an overdose and to understand what to do when you encounter one.

Not every overdose is going to look the same.

Below are the most common symptoms of overdosing involving the most widely-abused drugs today.

Cocaine – One of Americas most widely-abused drugs, cocaine is powerful and dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on coke may include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing

HeroinAn especially dangerous illicit drug, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Prescription Opioids – These drugs are typically used to treat pain in patients. But they’re also highly addictive and quite dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin
  • Death

Alcohol – Alcohol is both widely available and addictive. And when taken in excess, it can lead to serious health problems. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Benzodiazepines – These drugs are usually prescribed for depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. But they can also be addictive and abused recreationally. Here are some benzo overdose signs to watch out for.

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Crystal Meth – An exceptionally powerful stimulant, meth is as damaging as it is addictive. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

The key to treating an overdose is getting expert help and getting it fast. So, if you notice the signs of an overdose above, call 9-1-1 immediately.

You’ll be put in touch with operators that can dispatch an ambulance to your location while also informing you on how to best treat the victim while you wait. If you do have to leave the side of the victim to contact emergency services, be sure to place them into what’s known as the “recovery position” to prevent complications like vomiting and choking.

You may also be asked a number of questions on the phone to help them get a better sense of what happened. These questions could include:

You might also have to perform CPR or other life-saving treatments at the direction of the operator.

After the ambulance arrives, the EMTs will be able to take over caring for the victim. They may use specialized medications like naloxone to reverse the effects of the overdose. They might also use special equipment to restart the breathing or heartbeat of the victim.

The victim will likely be transferred to the hospital for more comprehensive care and observation as well.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

Support is an important part of any road to recovery – that much is clear. And while it might be a core component, it and it alone is often not enough to keep an addict from turning back to substance abuse.

That’s because addiction is a serious brain disease. And for many, the physical changes that occur can be so powerful and overwhelming that even the most strong-willed individual will still fall victim to their own cravings.

That’s why it’s so important to partner with a professional addiction treatment program. These programs use evidence-based tools and strategies to directly address the full spectrum of addiction – from underlying mental disorders and past trauma to physical cravings and ineffective coping mechanisms.

In the end, a professional program gives individuals the absolute best chance at achieving and maintaining sobriety. And without it, the overwhelming majority of addicts will end up relapsing.

In general, there are two main types of professional treatment programs: detoxification programs and rehabilitation programs.

Detoxification is the first phase of any successful treatment program. And it focuses specifically on the most physically intensive part of recovery known as withdrawal. This is when an addict’s body needs to readjust to living without the substance of abuse. And it can be accompanied by a range of both psychologically and physically uncomfortable symptoms.

The most common of these include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

In many cases, these symptoms can actually be so hard to get through that recovering addicts will resort to using again, just for some relief.

A professional detoxification program uses a variety of treatments to make this process far more comfortable. They may use medications, special meal plans, or a range of other strategies.

These programs will also prevent and treat serious complications that are likely to occur along the way. And since many of these complications can actually be deadly without medical intervention, it’s strongly advisable to partner with a detoxification program during recovery.

Rehabilitation comes next, and it's more concerned with the long-lasting mental effects of an addiction. Compulsive drug seeking behaviors, poor stress management techniques, and underlying co-occurring disorders are just some of the focuses of this program.

And by using one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapies, these programs can help reverse the negative behaviors and tendencies of addicts and help them adopt healthier new ones along the way.

There are three different types of rehab programs too.

  • Inpatient (~30 Days) – This kind of program requires patients to actually eat, sleep, and receive treatment all at the same centralized location. This more controlled environment allows for a higher level of care as well as a lower chance of relapse. However, it can be disruptive in that many don’t allow patients to attend work or school at the same time.
  • Outpatient(~90 Days) – An outpatient program is a more flexible alternative. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings several times a week rather than throughout the day. And that means that patients can spend their days and nights however they wish. With more freedom, though, also comes a higher risk of relapse.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) (~90 Days) – A more focused type of outpatient care, IOPs have evening treatment sessions that typically last longer and occur more frequently throughout the week.

Davenport isn’t especially large. And unfortunately, there aren’t any professional addiction detox or rehab programs in town. However, making the choice to travel for treatment does have its benefits.

For example, doing so can open up the door to numerous other programs that may not have been considered based on proximity alone. And that means that recovering addicts will have more options that could offer better services, more expertise, and a higher rate of success.

But a better likelihood of recovery isn’t the only benefit to travelling for treatment. And in fact, there are quite a few more to consider. Below are just some of the most notable.

  • May offer you different medications that aren’t offered in nearby programs.
  • Offers more privacy and confidentiality since there’s less of a chance of running into someone you know.
  • Helps solidify your commitment to recovery since its harder to quit

Northpoint Washington: The Premier Option for Addiction Treatment Around Davenport, Washington

While Davenport may not be the largest community in western Washington, that doesn’t mean that residents here don’t have access to a range of addiction resources to aid in their journey to sobriety.

And when it does come time to partner with a professional addiction program, travelling for treatment can make recovery far more successful. That’s where Northpoint Washington comes in.

At our modern yet comfortable facility in Edmonds, we are proud to offer the highest quality drug rehab and alcohol detox/rehabilitation programs in the state. That’s because we use only empirical programs with one of the highest staff-to-patient ratios in the area. We’re even nationally accredited by the Joint Commission.

However, we know that no program is right for everyone. And only a short talk with an addiction professional can help you determine if our program is right for you or your loved one.

But in the end, we are passionate about recovery. And we’d love to be able to help you down your road to recovery.

So please, get in touch with us today to get started now.
