Guide to Addiction Resources in Cosmopolis, WA

Cosmopolis, Washington Drug and Alcohol Addiction Resources

Incorporated in 1891, Cosmopolis is actually the oldest city in Grays Harbor County, Washington.

And though it is a small, tightly-knit community, it too suffers from the ever-growing problem of alcohol and drug addiction facing the rest of the country.

Unfortunately, many residents here don’t realize that this town and the surrounding areas have a range of addiction resources including overdose help, local support groups, and professional addiction treatment programs. And that means that many people just aren’t getting the kind of help they need to get clean.

This comprehensive guide to addiction resources in Cosmopolis, WA takes a look at the best of these resources.

Local Support Groups Near Cosmopolis, Washington

Overcoming an addiction isn’t just a matter of willpower. It’s also about building up the proper social support network to help stay motivated, connected, and ultimately drug-free. But not everyone has this social support network at hand. That’s where local support groups come in.

Many cities and towns across the United States have a range of local support groups that recovering addicts can take advantage of. And most are free to attend, open to all, and widely available all over the country.

Below are just some of the closest local support groups serving the Cosmopolis, Washington area.

Perhaps the most well-known support group, Alcoholics Anonymous is a support group dedicated to helping recovering alcoholics stay sober. And in 2017, it boasted membership numbers of nearly 2.1 million across the world.

Part of what makes AA so successful is the accessibility of the program. Meetings are happening in most major cities in the U.S. And it’s also built on the 12-step model – a recovery strategy actually endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Below are just some of the closest AA groups happening near Cosmopolis.

One of the first offshoots of AA, Narcotics Anonymous is another 12-step group that’s free, open to all, and widely accessible. But unlike Alcoholics Anonymous, NA is open to addictions of all kinds – not just alcoholism.

There quite a few meetings happening in and around Cosmopolis to choose from too.

The addicts themselves aren’t the only ones that suffer because of an addiction. Friends, family members, and even coworkers can all experience serious problems as the result of someone else’s substance abuse. And unfortunately, these individuals often don’t get the support they need to stay happy, healthy, and safe.

Al-Anon is a 12-step group devoted to helping these individuals in particular. They offer guidance to those who have been hurt by a loved one’s drinking and offer invaluable support that may not have otherwise been available.

Al-Anon meetings are a bit harder to come by compared to other 12-step groups. But even still, there are quite a few to choose from nearby.

Young people often have a hard time opening up to others about how a friend or family member’s alcoholism has impacted their lives. And part of this struggle comes from the fact that many support groups will have members that are two, three, or even four times their age.

Alateen is a 12-step support group designed to help young people in particular open up to the healing that group support can provide. Members are required to fall within a certain age range, usually specific to each group. And for many, being surrounded by similar people can make it far easier to embrace the healing that these support groups provide.

Below are just some of the closest Alateen meetings happening nearby.

Growing up in an alcoholic home can cause serious problems. And for many, the trauma experienced during younger years can extend well into adulthood, often leading to emotional, social, and functional difficulties. And these can make it hard to live a happy and healthy life.

Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA is a 12-step group devoted to helping these individuals in particular. With the support and guidance here, people can find the healing needed to cope with and finally move on from their past trauma.

Not all support has to come from 12-step groups. And in fact, the approach to recovery taken in these groups simply may not be compatible with certain people’s beliefs in general. But thankfully, there are plenty of other places to find valuable support.

SMART Recovery is one of the best 12-step alternatives available. These groups teach members real-life strategies for coping with cravings and overcoming triggers so they can stay sober longer. It’s also a 100% non-spiritual group.

Plus, meetings are led by a certified instructor, not members themselves.

SMART Recovery groups are pretty easy to find too. Below are just some of the closest in the area.

Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to attend in-person support meetings. They may have an unusual or especially-packed schedule. They may not have reliable transportation. Or maybe they just don’t feel comfortable talking about their addiction yet.

No matter the reason, there are more flexible alternatives available. And online support groups are some of the best.

These groups typically take place over email, in real-time chatrooms, or even via video teleconferencing. Each group is different.

But the common theme to each is that they offer invaluable support to individuals who may not have otherwise had access to it.

Below are just some of the best places to get started.

The Dangers of Overdosing

Overdoses are without a doubt one of the most dangerous effects of a substance use disorder. They can cause serious damage to vital internal organs and can even result in permanent disabilities that victims have to live with for the rest of their lives.

Plus, overdoses have also gotten increasingly deadly in the past few decades. In 1999, drug overdoses were the cause of around 17 thousand deaths in the United States. In 2017, that number rose to more than 70 thousand deaths – an increase of 316%.

It’s never been more important, then, to know how to spot the signs of an overdose and treat one in case of an emergency.

Not all overdoses look the same.

Below are some of the most common overdose symptoms for some of the most widely-abused drugs today.

Prescription Opioids – These drugs are typically used to treat pain in patients. But they’re also highly addictive and quite dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Cocaine – One of Americas most widely-abused drugs, cocaine is powerful and dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on coke may include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – Alcohol is both widely available and addictive. And when taken in excess, it can lead to serious health problems. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

HeroinAn especially dangerous illicit drug, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Benzodiazepines – These drugs are usually prescribed for depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. But they can also be addictive and abused recreationally. Here are some benzo overdose signs to watch out for.

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Crystal Meth – An exceptionally powerful stimulant, meth is as damaging as it is addictive. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

The most important step in treating an overdose is getting professional help as quickly as possible. If you notice the symptoms of an overdose above, be sure to call 9-1-1 immediately.

If you do have to leave the side of the victim, be sure to place them into the recovery position to prevent potentially fatal complications.

The operators will be able to dispatch an ambulance to your location while also instructing you on how best to treat the victim. They’ll also likely ask you a range of questions to get a better idea of the situation. These may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What’s their current condition?
  • What drug caused the overdose and when was it last used?
  • Does the victim have a history of substance abuse?
  • Do they have a prescription for the drug?

You may also be asked to perform CPR or administer other life-saving treatments like inducing vomiting. Be sure to follow instructions as closely as possible.

Once the ambulance arrives, the EMTs will take over treating the victim. They may use specialized equipment or medications like naloxone to help reverse the effects of the overdose all together.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

While support groups can be a vital part of any successful recovery program, they alone often aren’t enough to help an addict get clean and stay clean for good. And in the overwhelming majority of cases, someone with a substance use disorder will need a much higher level of care to get sober permanently.

A professional treatment program is designed to offer this higher level of care. They use evidence-based strategies and techniques that have been proven by hard science to give recovering addicts the tools, support, and strategies they need to push through the hardest stages of recovery.

And without them, most addicts will unfortunately end up relapsing not long after quitting.

In general, there are two main types of professional treatment programs: detoxification programs and rehabilitation programs.

Detoxification is the first stage of a professional addiction program. And in its most basic sense, it deals with the physical dependency part of addiction by helping patients get through withdrawal without relapsing.

Withdrawal is when the body readjusts to functioning normally without the help of the addictive substance. And depending on the duration and severity of the addiction, withdrawal can bring with it some incredibly uncomfortable physical and psychological symptoms.

Some of the most common withdrawals may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

A professional detoxification program is designed to give patients the absolute best shot at staying clean during withdrawal by making it as comfortable as possible. They reduce the severity of symptoms by using a variety of treatments and medications. And the more comfortable the patient is, the less likely they’ll be to relapse.

On top of that, a detoxification program also prevents and treats dangerous complications that can pop up during withdrawal. And without the help of a qualified professional program, these complications can actually end up being fatal.

Rehabilitation is the second stage of recovery, and it comes right after withdrawal. If detox is concerned with treating the physical side of addiction, rehabilitation is focused on the mental side of it.

Using treatments like one-on-one counseling, group talk, and behavioral therapies, rehabilitation programs address and try to reverse the compulsive drug-seeking behaviors and self-destructive tendencies that so often come with substance abuse.

There are three different types of rehab programs too.

  • InpatientOften what most people imagine when they think of rehab, an inpatient program requires patients to actually stay at a recovery facility during treatment. This more controlled environment allows for a higher level of treatment and, thus, a generally higher rate of success. They’re usually around 30 days long.
  • Outpatient – An outpatient program is a bit more flexible than inpatient. Rather than requiring patients to stay in a centralized location, they’re free to spend their days and nights as they wish. Treatment takes place just several times a week, usually on the weekends or in the evenings. They’re usually about 3 months long.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – This type of program balances a high level of care with a flexible schedule. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings like outpatient, but they’re often quite a bit longer and happen more often throughout the week.

While a professional treatment program is key to getting clean for good, unfortunately there aren’t many options in Cosmopolis or the surrounding areas. And that means that most residents will need to travel in order to get the expert help they need.

Luckily, choosing to travel for treatment can actually end up being one of the best decisions a recovering addict can make. That’s because doing so can actually open up the doors to programs with much higher success rates, better amenities, and a more varied range of treatment approaches. And all of that often ends up translating into a better chance of getting sober for good.

There are a couple of other benefits to travelling for treatment too. Below are just some of the most notable.

  • Helps solidify your commitment to recovery since its harder to quit
  • Lets you find facilities that have a better track record with your particular type of addiction
  • May offer you different medications that aren’t offered in nearby programs.
  • May help you find more comfortable amenities that can make recovery even easier
  • Offers more privacy and confidentiality since there’s less of a chance of running into someone you know.
