Alcoholics Anonymous, also called AA, is a worldwide support network for alcohol addicts. The organization holds free meetings where problem drinkers go to find help.
In these meetings, alcoholics from all different backgrounds get together to discuss addiction. They share stories. They talk about their lives. And most importantly, they update each other on their recovery progress.
In a typical meeting, it’s common to see people who’ve been sober for three or four decades as well as people who’ve only been sober for a few hours. There are no requirements for membership. Every member understands that alcoholism is a crippling disease, so they don’t judge anyone for their choices.
This organization was founded nearly 80 years ago. Since then, it’s helped countless addicts to get their lives back on track. Support is the most valuable resource for recovering addicts.

Narcotics Anonymous
Narcotics Anonymous, or NA, has a similar model to AA. It holds free, daily meetings where recovering addicts go to find support. Both organizations operate globally.
However, this group is designed for people who use drugs. Although drug addicts are welcome in Alcoholics Anonymous, NA meetings may be more helpful.
In these meetings, addicts from all walks of life come together. They all have different addictions and have experienced different things. Some people are addicted to heroin. Others are addicted to prescription pills. Some members are hooked on crystal meth, cocaine or marijuana.
The group doesn’t privilege any drug over another. They simply want to see everyone get clean.
Like AA, this program is based around the Twelve Steps. The Steps are a system designed to help people get sober. Through the Steps, members work to apologize for the damage they’ve caused and move forward toward a happier, healthier life.
The NA community in Sand Point is lively and welcoming. Anyone who struggles with addiction is invited.

SMART Recovery
Twelve Step programs don’t work for everyone. They definitely help some people. But, there’s no cure-all solution for addiction.
SMART Recovery is a great alternative to AA and NA. This program takes a more scientific approach to the problem. Whereas Anonymous programs are slightly spiritual, SMART offers more practical, actionable advice.
In this group, members work to identify the triggers that drive them to use. Then, they come up with techniques for managing stress when those triggers arise. The meetings also have a group support component, which is like the conversations in NA and AA.
SMART Recovery is popular in Seattle. Dozens of recovering addicts gather in local meetings.

Al-Anon
Al-Anon is a resource for the family members of addicted people. Oftentimes, they suffer just as bad as the addict themselves.
It’s never easy to watch someone you love hurt themselves with drugs and alcohol. Over time, their condition can cause depression, anxiety, anger, and shame. This can leave the family member feeling overwhelmed and isolated.
Al-Anon meetings are places where these individuals can go to talk. By meeting others who’ve been through the same situation, these people will see that they are not alone. The members of this group support one another, discuss their experiences and offer advice.
It’s a great resource for anyone whose life has been affected by another person’s addiction.
