Addiction Resources in Haller Lake, WA

Haller Lake, Washington Overdose, Support, & Treatment Addiction Resources

Located within the Metro Seattle Area, Haller Lake is a small and beautiful community. But as with other areas in the pacific northwest, it’s no stranger to substance abuse either.

Unfortunately, many residents here don’t fully understand how many addiction resources are located right around the corner. And for some, not knowing where to turn for help can make it so much harder to quit, even when they want to so badly.

This guide to addiction resources in and around Haller Lake, Washington takes a deeper dive into these resources. What should you do in case of an overdose? Where can you find local support groups? And how do you know how to find the right professional treatment program?

We’ll take a look at these questions and more in this comprehensive guide.

The Dangers of Overdosing

Overdoses are on the rise across the country. And in many cases, these overdoses can be fatal.

In fact, the problem has gotten so out of hand that fatal overdoses are now the number one cause of death among Americans under the age of 50. And when you look at the numbers, it’s easy to see why.

According to the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA), an astounding 72,237 people in the U.S. died from a drug overdose in 2017. That number is up from around 36 thousand just a decade earlier and 16,849 in 1999.

A major part of the problem is the uptick in overdoses related to opioids like oxycodone, heroin, and fentanyl. But it isn’t just opioids that are responsible. ODs involving cocaine, benzodiazepines, and psychostimulants are all increasing year over year.

And one of the best ways to combat this deadly fallout is by educating yourself on the signs of an overdose and what to do to help treat one.

Not all drugs will have the same overdose symptoms. And learning how to spot these signs early can end up saving a life.

Below are some of the most common overdose symptoms for the most widely abused drugs today.

Prescription Opioids – These drugs are used to treat pain. But they are also highly addictive. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Cocaine – One of the most popular recreational drugs, cocaine can be deadly when taken in large quantities. Some signs of an overdose on this drug could include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – Alcohol is without a doubt one of the most widely abused addictive substances in the world. And drinking too much of it can easily lead to a potentially fatal overdose. Here are some of the signs to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Crystal Meth – A horrific drug, crystal meth is as potent as it is addictive. And taking too much of it can very easily lead to an overdose. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Benzodiazepines – These drugs are usually prescribed for mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Some of the most common ones are Xanax and Ativan. But like other prescription drugs, these are also frequently abused for recreational purposes. Overdosing on them can also be quite dangerous. Below are some symptoms of a benzo overdose.

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

HeroinWidely abused and particularly dangerous, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

After identifying the signs of an overdose, the next step is to contact emergency services by calling 9-1-1 immediately. The operators on the other line will be able to walk you through life-saving measures you can take while also sending an ambulance to your location.

If you do have to leave the side of a victim that’s unconscious, be sure to place them in what’s known as the recovery position. This position can help cut down on the risk of certain complications, some of which can be fatal. And even if you’re only going to be gone for a minute, it can still save their life.

The operator may ask several questions in order to get a better feel for the situation. These may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, weight, and current condition of the victim?
  • What drugs did they take and when did they last take them?
  • Did they have a legitimate prescription for the drugs?
  • Have they used drugs recreationally in the past?

It’s critical to answer all of these questions 100% honestly. The more accurate the information they have, the better able they’ll be to actually help the victim.

They may also ask you to administer CPR, induce vomiting, or perform other measures to help ensure the best outcome.

When the ambulance does arrive, the medical professionals will be able to provide more comprehensive care and may even provide overdose-reversing drugs like naloxone.

In the end, honesty with operators and early action on your part are key for making the best of this dangerous situation.

Haller Lake, WA Treatment Options for Addiction and Alcoholism

Local Support Groups Near Haller Lake, WA

Using local support groups is a great way to maintain sobriety. These groups connect recovering addicts with other people just like them. And in the process, they learn more about their own addiction while also building a social support network that helps prevent relapse down the line.

There are a variety of support groups to choose from in the Haller Lake, Washington area too. Below are just some of the most popular.

One of the most widely-known support groups, Alcoholics Anonymous is built on the principles of the 12 steps.

In fact, it was the original 12-step group. This model of recovery has been around since 1935 and has spurred numerous offshoots of other related programs like Cocaine Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, and so many more. It’s also one of just a few treatment modalities that are actually backed up by hard science.

Part of what makes Alcoholics Anonymous so popular is the fact that it’s so accessible. Meetings are numerous, open to all, and 100% free to attend.

And luckily, there are plenty of AA groups in the Haller Lake area to choose from.

While AA deals exclusively with alcoholism, Narcotics Anonymous opens up the door to every type of addiction. Cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, marijuana, and even alcohol abusers are all welcome. And like AA, it uses the 12-step model to help support recovering substance abusers maintain their sobriety.

There are numerous NA groups around Haller Lake to look into too.

Addicts themselves aren’t the only ones that suffer because of a substance abuse problem. In fact, some of the harshest impacts are felt by those around a habitual alcohol user – people like friends, family members, and even coworkers.

For them, there’s Al-Anon. This group is built on the 12-step model, but it actually focuses on the people hurt by another’s substance abuse. These groups can offer guidance, emotional and motivational support, and insight into addiction as a whole.

And within the Haller Lake area, there are quite a few Al-Anon groups available.

Alateen is a youth-focused Al-Anon group. It brings together younger people who have been hurt by another’s drinking and helps them stay happy, healthy, and supported.

These individuals in particular are in extremely formative years. And when they get together with others like them, they’re much more likely to open up and get the support they so desperately need.

Alateen meetings are a bit harder to come by, but some of the closest are as follows.

Growing up in an alcoholic household can have enormously destructive repercussions. And some of these can continue to affect a person throughout their entire life.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) groups are specifically for people who grew up in an alcoholic home but are still experiencing problems well after their childhood.

There are a number of ACoA meetings that take place near Haller Lake too.

While the previous meetings have all been 12-step groups, SMART Recovery offers an alternative model for recovery.

This group tries to focus more on the present day, giving members actionable strategies and techniques for fending off cravings and avoiding triggers. Plus, each lesson is grounded in the latest science in the field of addiction. Meetings are also led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.

There aren't as many SMART Recovery meetings as there are 12-step groups, but there are still plenty to choose from nearby.

Sometimes it can be tough to attend in-person meetings. Maybe it’s the travel time or a schedule conflict. Or perhaps it’s just embarrassing to admit that there’s even a problem in the first place.

Whatever the reason, not all support groups take place face-to-face. And online support groups offer a great alternative.

These groups can take place in real-time chat rooms, online forums, email, or even via teleconferencing.

In the end, online support groups offer much more flexibility. And all you need is a computer or smart device and an internet connection.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

While support can be invaluable in overcoming addictions of all kinds, the overwhelming majority of addicts are going to need professional help in order to get clean – and stay clean.

That’s where addiction treatment programs come in. These specialized facilities give recovering addicts the tools and the support they need to conquer addiction and stay off drugs and alcohol for the long-term.

A professional program is the absolute best way to both make recovery far more likely but also to keep patients safe in the process. Below are just a few of the other benefits that professional addiction treatment programs offer.

  • Significantly smaller relapse rates compared to quitting alone
  • Is far safer than trying to detox at home
  • Provides access to addiction medications that can make recovery much easier
  • Utilizes evidence-based techniques that are built on real science
  • Offers more comfortable amenities in many cases
  • 24/7 nursing care is usually available (very important for keeping patients safe)

Treatment is usually broken down into two specific phases: detoxification and rehabilitation.

The first phase, detoxification, involves letting the body readjust to functioning normally without the help of the addictive substance. While this phase is usually the shortest, it can often be the most physically intense. Some of the most common physical and mental symptoms experienced during this phase (called withdrawals) include:

  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Depression
  • Nausea and diarrhea
  • Anxiety
  • Vomiting
  • Cold Sweats
  • Paranoia

A professional program helps patients push through these symptoms and refrain from turning back to substance abuse to avoid feeling these symptoms any longer.

Rehabilitation is the next phase. And it deals more with the psychological side of recovery. Here patients go through a variety of treatments including one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapy. These are all aimed at reversing the destructive behavior routines that both led to and fed into continued substance abuse.

There are three types of rehab programs too.

  • Inpatient – Patients in this program spend the duration of the program within the facility. That means eating, sleeping, and treatment all takes place in the same location. These programs can be kind of disruptive to daily life though. So for some, it might not be the best option.
  • Outpatient – An outpatient program provides quite a bit more flexibility. Patients in these programs are able to live out there days as normal (job, school, family obligations, etc.). But patients get their treatments in the evening several times a week rather than throughout the day.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – An IOP gives patients a higher level of care without sacrificing their daily schedule. Like outpatient, treatment sessions take place in the evenings. But in an IOP, these sessions usually last quite a bit longer and occur more frequently too.

While there are a few treatment options to choose from near Haller Lake (about 4 professional programs within a 6-mile radius), that doesn’t mean that these programs are necessarily the best options.

In fact, making the choice to travel for treatment can actually end up being one of the best recovery decisions you can make.

That’s because doing so can open up the door to a higher level of quality for treatment. Added to that, choosing to travel can also help solidify the commitment to recovery since it’s significantly harder to quit. Plus, patients won’t have to worry about running into anyone they know either in case they’re embarrassed about their addiction.

Deciding on which program to partner with can be tough. But ultimately, choosing the one that works for you is far more important than picking one that’s simply cheaper or closer.
