Guide to Addiction Resources in Kelso, WA

Kelso, Washington Support & Treatment Addiction Resources

Otherwise known as “The City of Friendly People,” Kelso is a Southwest Washington community situated where the Columbia River meets the Cowlitz River.

And like so many other cities across the state, many residents of Kelso are struggling with a serious alcohol or drug use disorder.

To make matters worse, many people don’t know where to find help for their addiction. And as a result, they continue to suffer through the cycle of addiction with no hope of ever breaking free.

But fortunately, there are plenty of addiction resources nearby to make the journey to recovery not only possible but also significantly easier.

This guide to addiction resources in Kelso, Washington points out some of the best in the area.

Local Support Groups Near Kelso, Washington

While overcoming addiction certainly requires a fair amount of willpower, that’s not the only thing that’s involved in achieving sobriety. A solid system of support is also key. And even the most resolute individual will fall victim to relapse if they don’t have the help of others.

Local support groups are some of the best sources of this support. They’re typically free to attend, open to all, and are widely available across the country.

Below are just some of the best local support groups in the Kelso area.

One of the first and most successful support groups, Alcoholics Anonymous is famous for being incredibly accessible and widespread. And since its founding in 1935, it’s grown to have over 2.1 million active members worldwide.

The 12-step model first developed in AA is actually so successful (it’s even supported by NIDA) that it’s spawned a number of offshoot support programs dedicated to treating other forms of addiction besides alcoholism.

There are quite a few AA meetings happening around Kelso too.

One of the first offshoots of AA that used the 12-steps, Narcotics Anonymous (NA) was first founded in 1953. Since then, it’s grown to more than 67 thousand different weekly meetings in 139 countries around the world.

Rather than focusing on a single substance of abuse like alcohol, NA opens up the doors to all forms of substance addiction. Heroin addicts, crystal meth users, coke fiends, and even alcoholics are all welcome to attend.

Kelso residents have a wide range of NA meetings to pick from too. Below are some of the closest.

One of the most destructive parts of addiction is the fact that it impacts more than just the substance abuser. Friends, family members, associates, and even coworkers can all be negatively impacted by someone’s addiction as well. And for them, there’s Al-Anon.

Al-Anon is a 12-step program designed specifically for those around an addict that has been affected by their substance abuse. Here they can share their stories, get advice, and receive the emotional support they need to stay happy and healthy.

Al-Anon groups aren’t quite as common as AA or NA meetings, but there are still plenty of options in the Kelso area.

For teens, an alcoholic friend or family member can be especially devastating. And unfortunately, many don’t know where to go to get help and support.

Alateen is a 12-step offshoot of Al-Anon focused specifically on teens. Here, young people can feel comfortable and safe sharing their story amongst their peers rather than a room full of adults.

There aren’t any Alateen meetings in Kelso or nearby Longview. But still, there are a few meetings that aren’t too far away.

Similar to the relationship between AA and Al-Anon, Nar-Anon is the family side of Narcotics Anonymous. Members of these groups are usually friends or family members of addicts of any kind, not just alcoholics.

Meetings are a bit sparser with Nar-Anon. However, there are still a few nearby Kelso.

Alcoholism can have long-lasting impacts not just on the individual, but also on their children. And many people who grew up in an alcoholic home still struggle with the emotional and developmental scars from so long ago.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA), a 12-step group, focuses on these specific individuals.

There are quite a few ACoA meetings taking place near Kelso, Washington.

While all of the prior groups have been built on the 12 steps, this isn’t the only model for recovery available. There are plenty of non-12-step alternatives out there. And for some, they can be just as effective at keeping recovering addicts sober.

SMART Recovery is one of the most notable 12-step alternatives. This group is non-spiritual in nature and focuses more on the present than the past. It teaches recovering addicts real-life strategies that they can start using immediately to overcome cravings, avoid triggers, and stay clean.

Groups are also led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.

Below are some of the closest SMART Recovery meetings.

Not everyone will be able to make it to the groups above. Maybe they have an erratic schedule or no reliable means of transportation. No matter the reason, there are still other options available.

Online support groups are some of the most flexible options around. These meetings can take place over email, real-time chatrooms, or even through video conferencing.

Below are just a few places to get started.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

Support is always going to play a massive role in recovery. But it and it alone often isn’t enough to keep recovering addicts from falling back into addiction – especially during the initial stages of recovery.

That’s where a professional treatment program comes in. These programs are built on evidence-based treatments and strategies that are proven by science to support recovery. And the experts here guide patients through developing healthier life strategies while showing them how to stay sober.

In the end, a professional program is the absolute best way to get clean and stay clean.

In general, there are two main types of professional treatment programs: detoxification programs and rehabilitation programs.

Detoxification is the first stage of any successful recovery program. And it deals primarily with the withdrawal stage of getting clean. This stage is when the body readjusts to functioning normally without the addictive substance. And it’s characterized by a range of especially uncomfortable symptoms.

Some of the most common symptoms to expect include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

The process of detoxification can end up being so uncomfortable that many recovering addicts end up relapsing simply as a way to get some sort of relief from the symptoms.

A professional detox program will treat these symptoms so that it’s a much more comfortable process, thus reducing the risk of relapse. And on top of that, they’ll protect patients from any serious and even life-threatening complications that may arise.

Rehabilitation is the next essential stage. And if detox deals primarily with the physical side of addiction, rehab is all about treating the psychological side. Using treatments like one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapies, rehab programs teach patients how to reverse compulsive drug-seeking behaviors and replace them with healthier life strategies.

There are three different types of rehab programs too.

  • InpatientThe highest level of care, an inpatient program requires patients to actually stay at a treatment program. That means that eating, sleeping, and treatment all take place in the same centralized location. And while it offers more comprehensive treatment, it can be quite disruptive to normal daily life. They’re usually about 30 days long.
  • Outpatient – This rehab option is quite a bit more flexible. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings, giving patients the freedom to spend their days and nights however they wish. However, that freedom can also make the threat of relapse higher for some. They’re usually about 3 months long.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – This type of program is like an enhanced outpatient program. Treatment sessions still take place in the evenings and on weekends, but they also last longer and occur more frequently throughout the week.
