Alcohol – Though this drug is legal, alcohol poisoning can be incredibly deadly. Some of the most notable signs of an alcohol overdose include:
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
- Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
- Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
- Low body temperature (hypothermia)
- Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened
Benzodiazepines – Benzos like Vicodin and Ativan are usually prescribed for mood disorders like depression and anxiety. But they are also used recreationally. Symptoms of a benzodiazepine overdose may include:
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Unresponsiveness
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
- Hallucinations
- Slurred speech
- Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
- Coma
- Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)

- Seizures

- High body temperature, severe sweating

- Bluish color of the skin
- Fast or difficulty breathing
- Death
Crystal Meth – Crystal meth is a powerful stimulant and can cause a host of health problems for abusers. Overdoses can also be especially dangerous. Symptoms of a methamphetamine overdose include:
- Agitation
- Chest pain
- Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
- Heart attack
- Irregular or stopped heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Very high body temperature
- Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
- Paranoia
- Seizures
- Severe stomach pain
- Stroke
Heroin – One of the most notorious drugs on the streets today, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

Treating a drug or alcohol overdose requires fast action and complete honesty.
The first step is identifying the signs. After that, it’s all about contacting emergency services as quickly as possible. If you spot the symptoms of an overdose, call 9-1-1 immediately.
If you have to leave the side of the victim (even for a minute), be sure to put them into what’s known as the recovery position. This doesn’t take long to do and is instrumental in preventing life-threatening complications like choking.
The operator at 911 will likely ask for a range of information. Victim age, weight, and condition, types of substances taken, and whether or not they had a legitimate prescription are just a few examples.
It’s important to answer all of these questions accurately and honestly. Operators are only able to help if the information they get is true. And lying to them about, for example, if these drugs were illicit is only making it harder for them to save the life of the victim.
They may also ask you to administer CPR or take other treatment measures.
Once the ambulance arrives, the emergency personnel will then take over. They may end up using overdose-reversing medications like naloxone too.
