Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is one of the first 12-step programs to ever be created. These meetings are faith-based and require members to put their faith in a power greater than themselves. Members learn and practice twelve crucial steps that help them become more self-aware of who they are as a person. They also get to learn more about alcohol addiction and how it affects the brain, body, mind and soul.
AA meetings are free to attend. There’s no obligation to share. With that said, those who are willing to open up will usually get a lot more out of the meetings.

Al-Anon meetings follow the same meeting structure and style as 12-step programs. These meetings are not for the addicts, but for those close to them. Family and friends of alcoholics often have just as difficult of a time dealing with an alcohol use disorder (AUD). They may spend a disproportionate amount of time trying to help the alcoholic.
Al-Anon meetings help members better understand what it’s like to have an addiction to alcohol. They also help members figure out what they can do to help, and also understand that they should make decisions in their lives regardless of how the alcoholic may act or behave. Loved ones should not let an alcoholic’s actions dictate the trajectory or direction of their lives.

Living with a substance abuser is never an easy task. Many loved ones often get roped into the addiction as well. They may end up committing a good portion of their lives trying to help the drug addiction to no avail.
Nar Anon meetings are much like Al-Anon meetings, but they discuss drug-related topics. These meetings help loved ones of drug addicts learn how to manage their emotions and actions. They also help them better understand the intricacies behind a drug addiction, and what they can do to help the drug addict towards recovery.
Nar Anon meetings also give loved ones an opportunity to open up. It’s not healthy to keep everything bottled up inside. Those who are willing to share their experiences and feelings will often have a much easier time dealing with the cards that they were dealt with.
