“Seven years sober. I’m really grateful. It’s really lovely to be present in my life.”
Irish actor Colin Farrell put his feelings about sobriety very simply. He captured in those few words the sentiment shared by many who have recovered from an addiction - how much they enjoy being present in their own lives.
This idea brings to light the idea that those suffering from alcoholism or addiction aren’t present in their own lives. Addicts and alcoholics lack control and focus, among other things. They damage friendships and relationships, harm physical and mental health, and are derailed from long-pursued goals.
But, recovery from such addictions helps a former addict or alcoholic to regain control, get back on track, and be present.
Of course, the road to recovery is not often as simple or as easy as seeing the benefits. But this same road that often appears long, arduous, and even dangerous is full of other people, all headed in the same direction. The path is lined with volunteers and loved ones and trained professionals, all cheering you on and handing you what you need to be successful.
The road to recovery is difficult, but it is doable. And it is both worth it and necessary if you want to reclaim your life.
If you want to get clean or sober today, you’re in luck. These resources, groups, and individuals are in action all over the country - in places like SeaTac, Washington.
If you live in SeaTac and are looking to get clean, look no further. Just read below to learn what we have to say about topics such as:
If you suspect that you or a loved one has overdosed on drugs or has alcohol poisoning, it’s best to get professional medical help as quickly as possible. In case of an emergency, always call 911.
Washington state has a Good Samaritan Law, so you cannot be prosecuted for drug use, possession of drugs, or underage drinking if you call 911 to seek emergency medical help for yourself or someone else experiencing an overdose. Never let fear of the law keep you from seeking professional help for a drug overdose or alcohol poisoning.
The death toll from the American opioid epidemic gets higher every day, and it’s best to be prepared for the worst if you or a loved one is regularly using heroine or other opioids. These are dangerous drugs, and an overdose of heroin can lower the user’s heart rate and breathing very rapidly, leaving the user dead without quick medical intervention.
Both Narcan and Evzio are drugs approved by the U.S. FDA for the immediate treatment of heroin overdoses until emergency medical help can arrive.
If you or someone you know regularly uses heroin, it’s a good idea to make sure that a reliable friend or family member regularly carries one of these treatment options and knows how to administer it correctly. It’s also a good idea to review the proper usage of these treatments every so often so that the person administering it doesn’t panic if the time comes to administer it for real.
Even if someone administers Narcan or Evzio, they should also call emergency medical personnel. These immediate treatments are not meant to be the only response in case of an overdose, and are not an immediate cure-all.
Remember that because of Washington’s Good Samaritan Law, you cannot be prosecuted for use or possession of drugs if you call 911 to save someone from an overdose.
Cocaine overdoses can also kill a user very rapidly, so it’s important to think and act fast if you think you or a loved one has overdosed. As with any overdose, call 911 before proceeding.
Once you have called 911, there are three things you can do while you wait for help:
Remember that because of Washington’s Good Samaritan Law, you cannot be prosecuted for use or possession of drugs if you call 911 to save someone from an overdose.
Prescription drugs vary widely, so overdoses will look different depending on which drug was being used. In an emergency, you should always dial 911 and seek medical help.
You can also call your local poison control center for more information on what to do to prevent a prescription drug overdose or to get help for a prescription drug overdose in SeaTac.
Often, these poison centers have important information, so make sure you tell them the whole truth.

If you are an addict, often the best way to recovery completely and avoid relapses is an official addiction treatment program: rehab.
But because addiction is different for everyone, it isn’t as simple as just going to rehab. First, you have to determine what type of rehab or other treatment is best for you. There are two types of professional addiction treatment: inpatient and outpatient. Here, we discuss the pros and cons of each method so that you can decide what’s best for you.
Inpatient treatment is an addiction recovery method that involves an addict staying within a facility while they recover. A lot of inpatient facilities, including some near SeaTac, offer medicated detox programs alongside intensive counseling or therapy. Inpatient programs are the most structured type of rehab and provide the least independence for patients, which is sometimes necessary to truly kick an addiction.
Inpatient treatment is also known as the most successful recovery route for many former addicts. This means that of every former addict going through addiction treatment, those who completed an inpatient program are least likely to relapse.
Sometimes, time away and the constant attention of trained medical professionals is just what it takes to curb your habit and get your life back on track.
There are many options for inpatient rehab facilities around the country, and many reasons that inpatient treatment may or may not be the right choice for you or your loved one. It’s important to learn as much as you can and weigh all of your options before deciding on a course of treatment. Finding the recovery option that best suits your needs is the best way to make sure that your sobriety lasts.
Some of the benefits of inpatient treatment are:
However, some of the potential disadvantages of inpatient treatment are:
Inpatient treatment does have the highest success rates of any recovery method. However, it’s important that each patient finds the method that best suites them, which may be inpatient or outpatient. The best route will depend on many details specific to the addiction and the addict themself.
Unlike inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment programs do not involve staying overnight at a rehab facility. Outpatient means that the former addict continues to live independently, but comes to the rehab facility for regularly-scheduled appointments or group sessions.
Outpatient treatment can be a strong option for those trying to break an addiction or an abusive habit. An intensive program with frequent check-ins allows the patient to continue to live in their own home and stay surrounded by their own support system, which is often ideal.
There are many outpatient programs near SeaTac and across the country, so you have many opportunities to find the one that’s best for you and your recovery process if you’ve decided on using an outpatient program.
If you still aren’t sure if outpatient treatment is right for you, consider the advantages and disadvantages of outpatient treatment.
The advantages of outpatient treatment include:
The potential disadvantages of outpatient treatment include:
Deciding that outpatient treatment isn’t what’s best for you doesn’t mean you’re weak. Opting in to inpatient treatment, with more structure and supervision, often just means that you want to get all the help you can to make your recovery and journey to sobriety as successful as possible. For some, outpatient treatment works. For others, it doesn’t. What’s important is that you find something that works, regardless of what that method is.
Perhaps your biggest barrier to getting help has been the financial cost of addiction recovery services. While this should never be an issue thanks to insurance and government grants for recovering addicts, it is often the case.
Thankfully, there are resources available to you in SeaTac and elsewhere in the country that are completely free. The most widespread free addiction resources are 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al Anon, and Alateen - and you can find all of these groups near SeaTac.
Alcoholics Anonymous, otherwise known as AA, is a support group for those recovering from alcoholism. By working their way through a series of 12 steps, participants learn to live sober lifestyles and to make amends for what they did while they were alcoholics.
Each newer member is mentored by a sponsor. This sponsor is someone who is farther along in their recovery and can help the newer member stay on track.
AA is a global organization, and many people have found success in being held accountable by others who are going through the same process as them.
You can find several different AA meetings in SeaTac and the surrounding cities. Keep in mind that it may take a few tries to really feel comfortable going. With so many options, you’re sure to find one that fits your schedule and needs.

Often, it’s not just the addicts themselves that need help. Those that love the addict - friends, family members, and others - are often impacted by the addict’s behavior, abuse, negligence, recklessness, or even poor health. These loved ones can suffer.
That’s why there are support groups just for these loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. In these groups, such as Al Anon, those who care about or live with an addict learn what addiction is, are reassured that it isn’t their fault, and learn healthy coping mechanisms. Essentially, they learn to reclaim their own life from the addiction.
Children and teens are also welcome at Al Anon meetings, but sometimes they feel most comfortable in a setting with other children and teens. For this reason, Alateen was formed. Alateen is exclusively for kids and teens. While Alateen covers everything that Al Anon does in a kid-friendly way, they also focus on breaking the generational cycles that would often lead these young people to become addicts to.
There are several Al Anon and Alateen meetings near SeaTac.
