As beautiful as Portage Bay’s viewpoints may be, the neighborhood is plagued with the same drug abuse problems faced by other American neighborhoods.
In recent years, an increasing number of Portage Bay residents have voiced concerns over the safety of their neighborhood. With drug addiction epidemic spreading faster and more vast across America, it is not surprising that neighborhoods like Portage Bay are witnessing the aftermath of addiction.
One approach Portage Bay residents can take in reducing addiction, and thus the crime rate, is getting their family member or friend the help they need and deserve as soon as possible. To do this, they can speak to a local drug and alcohol recovery specialist.
Alcohol and drug rehab programs can increase one’s chances of recovery. These addiction treatment programs include medical detox services, behavioral therapies, counselling and more. The goal of professional addiction treatment is to not only help addicts break free from a physical and chemical dependence on the drug, but to also help them learn how to manage addictive behaviors.
Substance abuse treatment programs come in many different levels of care. The two main options to choose from include:

There are many different types of mutual support groups to choose from. Some are science-based and some are faith-based. Try out different types to find one that works.
Recovering alcoholics should consider going to at least one Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting a week. This is an international support group made up of men and women who want to achieve one thing: to stop drinking. There are AA meetings in every city in the world, and this fellowship has helped millions of recovering alcoholics get sober. AA meetings are a type of 12-step program. Some steps include learning how to place one’s faith in recovery in a higher being and making a personal inventory of one’s shortcomings.

Stay committed to one's pledge to sobriety by going to at least one Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting a week. This mutual support group helps recovering drug abusers get the help and support that they need to abstain from drugs. Members connect with other recovering drug users, so they feel less alone on their journey to recovery. Some NA meetings may even match seasoned members with newcomers.
NA meetings are faith-based, like AA meetings. One of the main components of NA is learning how to place one’s faith in a power greater than themselves. Members also learn twelve philosophies and steps that help them better understand how to manage addictive behaviors.

Alcoholism affects more people than just the alcoholic. It also pulls in loved ones into the abyss. Family and friends need just as much support, but they often neglect to look for it. Even fewer loved ones seek support than the addicts although they may actually need it more. Al-Anon is a type of 12-step program that is designed specifically for loved ones of alcoholics. These meetings teach family and friends how to have a healthy relationship with the alcoholic. They also teach loved ones how to talk to the alcoholic about recovery.
Al-Anon meetings are faith-based, like AA and NA. They have the same meeting structure and style. These meetings are also free to attend. Loved ones should consider going to at least one meeting a week, if not more.

Family and friends of drug abusers often are hesitant to speak out about what they’re going through. They may want to respect the privacy of the drug abuser. Or, they may simply not know who will understand what they’re going through. Nor Anon meetings are mutual support groups designed for those whose lives have been impacted by a drug user. The drug user may not necessarily be in recovery.
At Nar Anon meetings, loved ones are able to share what they’re going through to people who can relate. They can also rest assured that everything shared at these meetings will be kept confidential. Another good thing about Nar Anon meetings is that they help loved ones learn how to draw boundaries and how to mend strained relationships with the drug users.

Although Al-Anon meetings are incredibly effective and educational, they may not be everyone. In particular, they tend to be not the best choice for those who are between the ages of 8 and 21. These individuals may feel like they don’t fit in when they go to Al-Anon meetings, as members tend to be older. Alateen meetings may offer a more intimate type of environment.
Alateen meetings are faith-based, and they also follow the same twelve steps and philosophies as Al-Anon. They give teenagers and young adults a chance to talk about what’s on their mind without having to worry that they’ll be judged. Everything shared at these meetings will also be kept 100% confidential.
