When you think of Madrona, Seattle, what do you think of?
Do you picture parks, red brick buildings, and waterfront property? Because the area has those in abundance.
Or do you picture residents struggling with addiction and alcoholism? Because believe it or not, the area has that too.
You likely don't picture the many people, groups, and programs designed to help those who’d like to recover. But those resources are just as much a part of the fabric of the Madrona society.
Madrona, like much of the rest of the United States, has fallen prey to the disease of addiction. The addictions of Madrona residents may go under the radar, but they’re just as serious as the opioid epidemic discussed on the news or the alcoholism so prevalent amongst celebrities.
This would be bad news, but instead, there’s hope. The groups and programs near Madrona that treat addiction are here to support you or your loved one as you get clean and sober and regain your life from the jaws of addiction.
The road to recovery should begin with a professional detox program, followed by a rehab program, for most addicts, alcoholics, or long-term substance abusers.
Detox is the process of removing the addictive substance from the user’s body. This process teaches their bodies to function without the substance if they’ve become physically dependent on it. Detox addresses the physical side of addiction. Leaving this part of addiction unaddressed increases the likelihood of a relapse.
Rehab, on the other hand, addresses the psychological side of addiction. There are two main types of rehab: inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. Both come with their own sets of benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to learn about both before deciding what sounds best for you.
Inpatient rehab is exactly what most people expect when they think of rehab. It’s what’s most commonly represented in media. For inpatient treatment, patients live at the treatment facility as they recover. They are supervised constantly by trained medical professionals and have limited contact with those outside of the facility.
During their time at the facility, patients will engage in both group and individual therapies. These sessions will work to address the root of the addiction. Patients will also probably have a full schedule of activities that teach them various ways of filling their time and coping without drugs or alcohol. They’ll likely also engage in activities to better their physical health, including consistent hydration, good nutrition, and exercise.
Inpatient treatment is shown to be the most effective addiction treatment method. This means that of all of the people who complete an addiction or alcoholism treatment program, those who have completed inpatient rehab are the least likely to relapse. Despite this, it’s important to keep in mind that everyone’s addiction is different. This means that treatment looks different for everyone, too.
Outpatient treatment is actually very similar to inpatient treatment. Almost all aspects of the treatment remain the same, but the patient continues to live in their own home. They only go to the facility itself for specific treatment activities and meetings.
Outpatient treatment tends to be cheaper than inpatient treatment. However, it also takes away the constant supervision and and encouragement provided by inpatient treatment. This can leave patients more susceptible to cravings and relapses.
Outpatient rehab is usually ideal for those with other lasting commitments, such as work or school. It can also be a good choice for those who have a strong support system.
Addiction recovery doesn’t end with the completion of detox or rehab. Recovering addicts must be prepared to continue to choose sobriety every day for the rest of their lives. And it won’t always be easy.
Something that helps many such recovering addicts long term is participation in a support group or 12 step group. These groups bring recovering addicts and alcoholics together to share their experiences and hold each other accountable. Participants learn coping mechanisms and how to make amends for past behavior, all in a group of nonjudgmental peers.
Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous also pair participants with a member who is further along with recovery, called a sponsor. Sponsors work alongside newer participants through the 12 steps to recovery and check in with them regularly. SMART Recovery groups instead follow a Four Point program, but with the same goal.

Alcoholics and addicts aren’t the only ones harmed by their drug and alcohol use. Often, their loved ones’ lives are just as affected. More often than not, the effect is negative.
Because of this, there are also support groups available for the friends and families of drug addicts and alcoholics. These groups let these affected loved ones come together and share experiences and learn more about what their friends and family members are going through, important coping mechanisms, and skills to prevent them from enabling those they love.
The most prominent of these groups are Al Anon, Nar Anon, and Alateen. Alateen caters specifically to the older children and teens who find themselves close to alcoholics. The group functions much like the other groups, but with an added emphasis on breaking generational cycles of addiction. This can prevent the young participants from following in the footsteps of the addict they know or love.
