Addiction is more rampant today than it’s ever been. More than 19.6 million Americans have struggled with this debilitating disease. And there aren’t any signs of the problem slowing down either.
And despite how common addiction is today, it’s one of the most isolating experiences an individual will ever go through. Many substance abusers feel they have nowhere to turn for help, nowhere to go to put them on the road to recovery.
But the truth is, there are actually more addiction resources available today than there ever have been. And in Mount Vernon, Washington, that’s just as true as anywhere else.
From overdose assistance and local support groups to educational opportunities and nearby treatment programs, this guide covers the numerous Mount Vernon addiction resources available today.
Addiction impacts nearly every aspect of an individual’s life – their social connections, their finances, their career, their legal record, and even who they are as a person.
But without a doubt one of the most devastating risks of becoming addicted is the higher likelihood of overdosing on drugs or alcohol.
And today, that problem has become worse than ever.
Drug overdoses have actually become so rampant across America that they now kill more people than guns, cars, and even certain cancers.
They’ve even become the number one cause of death for Americans under the age of 50.
While opioids like OxyContin, heroin, and illicit fentanyl are responsible for the majority of these deaths (around two thirds), other substances like crystal meth, cocaine, and even alcohol are killing record numbers of users each year.
With this rise in overdoses across the country, it’s never been more vital to know how to spot the signs of an overdose and what to do to help mitigate the harm that can come from it.
Time is of the essence here. Every second counts when treating an overdose, and that means being able to spot the physical and mental signs of this condition early on is vital.
Below are some symptoms to be on the lookout for when it comes to overdosing on some of the most commonly abused drugs today.
Alcohol – Some of the most notable signs of alcohol poisoning include:
Cocaine – Be on the lookout for the following signs of a cocaine overdose:
Prescription Opioids – Symptoms of overdosing on prescription opioids include:
Crystal Meth – Crystal meth overdoses are characterized by:
Heroin – Some signs of a heroin overdose include:
Benzodiazepines – Overdosing on benzodiazepines like Xanax can produce serious symptoms such as:
Once the symptoms of an overdose have been identified, the next step is to contact emergency services immediately.
This point is particularly important to stress because so many people don’t get the life-saving help they need simply because the people around them thought they would pull through it on their own.
Do not hesitate. Do not second guess. Call 9-1-1 now.
The experts there will not only send an ambulance to your location immediately but will also be able to offer instruction on how you can help reduce the harm while you wait.
Once emergency service workers arrive, they may administer certain medication like naloxone that can effectively reverse the overdose and save the life of the victim. They’ll also likely take them to a nearby hospital or emergency room for further care.
When it comes to support groups for addiction, few organizations can match the scale and popularity of 12-step groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon.
These community-led support programs are all 100% free, take place in many cities across the country, and as the names say, are completely anonymous when desired.
All of these meetings also follow the 12 core principles of recovery according to the group’s founders.
Added to that, when these groups are combined with professional treatment programs and a strong social support network, they have been scientifically proven to help reduce the chances of relapsing as well. They’re even one of the 8 evidence-based behavioral therapies listed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Alcoholics Anonymous or AA is by far the most widely known 12-step group.
It was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1935 and since then, has grown to nearly 2.1 million members worldwide with more than 120 thousand different groups.
During these meetings, recovering alcoholics are encouraged to share their experiences with addiction and learn from the lessons of others. Meetings will typically follow a number of formats, from open discussion and participation to a professional speaker to literature study – it simply depends on the individual group.
Many will also use at least some form of sponsorship – a type of mentorship program where a more seasoned member of AA helps guide a newcomer during the initial stages of the program. This provides an accountability partner as well as a form of social support, which can be essential during recovery.
Alcoholics Anonymous can provide a truly life-changing experience.
There are plenty of AA opportunities within Mount Vernon itself. However, these meetings are all closed – meaning only those who wish to control their drinking may attend.
Friends, family members, students, and individuals that are simply interested in the program are generally not allowed to attend these meetings.

One of the best things about AA is just how many different groups there are.

Addicts themselves aren’t the only people who are hurt by someone’s alcoholism. Friends, family members, and even coworkers can all feel the detrimental effects of a drinking problem too. And unfortunately, many don’t get the support they need to heal.
For them, there’s Al-Anon – a 12-step program designed to meet the specific support needs of friends and family members of alcoholics.
Insights learned in these meetings often span a variety of topics, from how to stop enabling your loved one and signs of an addiction to watch out for to learning how to stage an intervention.
And luckily, there are a number of Al-Anon meetings taking place within Mount Vernon itself.

Similar to AA, Narcotics Anonymous or NA is a 12-step group devoted to helping individuals overcome their addiction. But unlike AA, NA doesn’t confine itself just to one substance of abuse. Instead, it aims to tackle addiction as a whole – whether it be to heroin, prescription pills, methamphetamines, or even alcohol.
It’s also quite popular and widespread too. In fact, there are nearly 67 thousand different meetings that take place in 139 countries around the world.
And that means finding an NA meeting in Washington is a snap.
Since NA is so popular, there are a number of meetings to choose from within Mount Vernon itself. Have a look at their information below to find a meeting that works for you.

Not everyone will get the same benefits out of 12-step groups. Some may not fully agree with the 12-step approach and others may have a hard time accepting the alleged “spirituality” of the group (even though all 12-step groups are open to any system of beliefs and atheists and agnostics are all welcome to attend).
Luckily, 12-step groups aren’t the only option for support.
There are three groups in particular that offer an alternative to 12-step programs: SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Moderation Management.
SMART Recovery offers a science-based approach to overcoming addiction, coping with cravings, and maintaining sobriety in the face of stress and adversity.
More structured than most 12-step groups, SMART Recovery meetings are led by a certified instructor rather than community members. On top of that, the techniques taught in these groups change with discoveries in the field. It’s a dynamic and evidence-based approach to recovery that’s endorsed by some of the country’s leading authorities in addiction treatment.
S.O.S. or Secular Organizations for Sobriety takes a directly non-religious approach to recovery. It’s been helping addicts overcome their substance abuse problems for over 30 years and is made up of autonomous, non-professional local groups just like 12-step programs.
For those who aren’t quite at the stage of a full-blown alcoholic but still want to better control their drinking, there’s Moderation Management or MM. This program teaches members that they can in fact continue to drink without spiraling into alcoholism.
Not everyone will have the time or the means of transportation to attend in-person meetings as much as they want. But that doesn’t mean they can’t get the same benefits of attending a support group session thanks to online groups.
These groups take place in forums, real-time chat rooms, and even via teleconferencing with struggling addicts from around the world.
While education and social support are key components of a successful recovery, the overwhelming majority of addicts will need a higher level of care to stop using for good. That’s where professional addiction treatment comes in.
These programs are designed and run by addiction experts and medical staff to help ensure the best results during your recovery. They can help monitor health throughout every stage of the process, teach valuable relapse prevention strategies, and help you get to the core of your addiction. And that means you can start treating the cause rather than just the symptoms.
Professional treatment programs are made up of two services in particular: detoxification and rehabilitation.
Detoxification – The first stage of the recovery process, detox can also be one of the deadliest. During this stage, the body begins acclimating to functioning without the help of the addictive substance. And for many, it can also result in a host of incredibly uncomfortable physical and mental symptoms known as withdrawals.
These withdrawals can be dangerous for two reasons in particular. First, they can often lead addicts to start using again simply to find relief from the intense symptoms. And second, some drugs can actually cause withdrawals that actually be deadly.
In the end, partnering with a professional program for detoxification will not only ensure a smoother and often shorter process, but it will also give you the medical attention you need to stay healthy throughout.
Rehabilitation – While detoxification is a vital part of recovery, it isn’t effective in preventing future substance abuse if it isn’t combined with the essential second stage, rehabilitation.
Detox is more focused on the body and helping reverse the physical changes that have occurred over the course of addiction. Rehabilitation, on the other hand, involves treating the mind. These programs use behavioral therapies, individual counseling, group talk sessions, and more to help rewire the brain and relearn how to cope with life’s stresses without resorting to substance abuse.
It’s usually much longer than detoxification and usually requires a bit more work on the part of the addict too.
Finding the right treatment program for you can be confusing. And many times, people don’t fully understand the various programs that are available.
To help clear up this confusion, below are the three most popular types of rehabilitation programs along with a brief overview of their pros and cons.
Inpatient Rehabilitation – This is the model that most people think of when they imagine addiction rehab. These programs typically require patients to stay on the program campus at all times. That means eating, sleeping, and day-to-day activities all take place within the program.
This allows for a more controlled environment (and less temptation to use again) along with a more focused recovery process as patients are only focusing on how to get better. All of this typically translates into a better chance of a full recovery.
However, these programs can be quite disruptive to normal life. Most patients will not be able to go to school, work, or even attend to certain familial obligations. They are also more expensive than outpatient programs.
An inpatient treatment program will typically last for about one month.
Outpatient Rehab – Outpatient provides more flexibility than inpatient. It’s structured around evening treatment sessions that usually take place only a few times a week. And as a result, patients are able to live out their daily lives like they normally would for the most part.
These programs are also the more affordable option since the meals, sleeping arrangements, and extensive therapies of inpatient programs aren’t used in outpatient ones.
On the flip side, they may come with an increased risk of relapse since the environment is not nearly as controlled. And thus, the temptation to fall back into old habits may be much stronger.
An outpatient program will generally last for around 3 months.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – Similar in structure to outpatient programs, IOPs offer a higher level of care without sacrificing flexibility.
These programs feature evening treatment sessions, but the duration and frequency are usually more than outpatient programs. An hour and a half treatment session that occurs twice a week in outpatient may instead last for three hours and take place four times a week with IOPs.
These programs will also typically last for around 3 months.
Finding a treatment center that meets all of your particular needs can be tough.
Do they offer both detox and rehabilitation services?
Can they treat co-occurring disorders?
What types of therapies do they use?
There are a lot of questions to answer before deciding on any specific program. And the more options you have available, the easier it’s going to be to find the right program that checks all the boxes.
Unfortunately, many addicts tend to limit their search to treatment centers in their own hometown. And that, of course, means they have fewer programs to choose from.
The truth is, deciding to travel for addiction treatment can end up being the best choice you make about your recovery. Not only does it open up the door to a range of higher quality treatment options. But it also can solidify your commitment to your recovery, making it easier to avoid relapse down the line.
On top of that, the stigma of addiction can often be enough on its own to impede an individual’s recovery. And sometimes knowing that you won’t run into anyone from work or school when your treatment program is enough to keep you going back day after day.
In the end, the most important thing to remember is that addiction treatment is most effective when it’s right for you. So spend the extra time researching. Look outside of your hometown for treatment options. And be sure that you consider only the best programs in the area – not just the closest ones.
