Des Moines, Washington Overdose, Abuse, Addiction, & Treatment Resources

Located about halfway between Seattle and Tacoma, Des Moines is a medium-sized city that’s known for boating due to its easy access to the Puget Sound.

Like many other communities across the state and the U.S. as a whole, Des Moines is also struggling with a serious substance abuse problem.

King County as a whole continues to have the highest overdose death rates in the state, and though Des Moines isn’t as bad as surrounding areas like Seatac and Tukwila, the threat is still very real.

Thankfully, there are plenty of addiction resources in Des Moines to help people struggling with a substance abuse problem.

Whether you’re looking for help on what to do during an overdose, are trying to find local support groups nearby, or simply want to know more about education or professional treatment options, this guide will outline the best community resources for addiction in the area.

Overdose: A Very Real Danger of Substance Abuse

Without a doubt, one of the most tragic outcomes of too much drug or alcohol abuse is an overdose. These dangerous toxicity overloads not only cause permanent damage to the body and its internal organs but also can end up being deadly as well.

In fact, overdose death rates are higher than they’ve ever been. They’re so high today that drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death among Americans under the age of 50.

A major driver in this rise in mortality is the opioid epidemic and specifically the potent prescription painkiller fentanyl.

But that doesn’t mean that other drugs like cocaine, benzodiazepines (Xanax and Ativan), crystal meth, and prescription stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin aren’t at play here too.

And of course, there’s alcohol too, a drug that regularly kills almost 90 thousand Americans every year.

All addictive substances (even the legal ones) can be deadly when used improperly. And in order to minimize the harm that can result from an overdose on one of them, it’s crucial to know how to spot the signs of a serious problem.

The sooner you can, the lower the risk of permanent damage and death are going to be.

Not all overdoses are going to look the same. Each drug interacts with the body a little bit differently.

Below are the physical and mental signs of an overdose on one of the main types of addictive substances.

According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the most obvious signs of alcohol poisoning include:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

As MedlinePlus points out, some signs of overdosing on cocaine include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

If you think someone is overdosing on heroin, look for the following signs:

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing
  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • SKIN
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips
  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines
  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

There are three types of prescription medications that are typically abused today: prescription opioids, benzodiazepines, and prescription stimulants.

Prescription Opioids

Similar to heroin, prescription opioids have the following symptoms of overdose:

  • The person's face is extremely pale and/or feels clammy to the touch
  • Their body goes limp
  • Their fingernails or lips have a purple or blue color
  • They start vomiting or making gurgling noises
  • They cannot be awakened or are unable to speak
  • Their breathing or heartbeat slows or stops

Benzodiazepines

Overdosing on benzodiazepines like Xanax and Ativan usually cause symptoms such as:

  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness
  • Slurred speech
  • Lack of coordination
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coma

Prescription Stimulants

A prescription stimulant overdose may cause physical and psychological effects like:

  • Confusion
  • Headaches
  • Hyperactivity
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Rapid breathing
  • Stomach pain
  • Hallucinations
  • Panic
  • Aggressiveness
  • Fever of 106.7°F (41.5°C) or higher
  • Tremors
  • Hypertension
  • Heart attack
  • Break down of muscles, or rhabdomyolysis
  • Death

Some signs of a crystal meth overdose may include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Once you’ve identified the signs of a drug or alcohol overdose, the most critical next step is contacting emergency services. Every second counts here so do not hesitate or assume that the victim will recover on their own.

Call 9-1-1 immediately.

Once you do contact emergency services, they’ll likely instruct you on how to administer care that can end up saving the person’s life. This may include doing CPR, getting them to vomit, or even just putting them into the recovery position.

Some information you can have on-hand before calling that may be helpful includes:

  • The person’s age and weight
  • What was the drug they overdosed on? Try to be as specific as possible, especially when it comes to prescription medications.
  • How much of the drug did they consume and when was it taken?
  • Was it taken normally or was it snorted, smoked, or injected?
  • Did they have a prescription for the drug?

In most cases, they'll also send an ambulance to your location. Emergency service workers will then likely take the victim to a nearby hospital.

Free Addiction Community Resources

Overcoming addiction is no easy task. And for many, the fear of having to pay an exorbitant amount of money to recover is enough to stop people from getting help at all. In fact, among the 16.9 million Americans who felt they needed treatment but didn’t receive it, almost one third didn’t do so because of the costs.

What’s surprising is professional treatment is actually cheaper than it’s ever been thanks to recent changes in federal legislature. Today, insurance providers are now required by law to offer financial support for addiction treatment, and some companies even cover the entire cost.

Plus, many treatment centers actually provide financing or full sponsorship as well.

However, there are plenty of other free resources for Des Moines residents to choose from too. These include support meetings like 12-step recovery groups and others as well as community outreach organizations.

12-Step Meetings Near Des Moines, WA

Some of the best free resources in Des Moines and across the country in general are 12-step support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

12-Step Meetings Near Des Moines, WA

These groups will help keep you focused on recovery after a professional treatment program and can help you maintain a positive outlook on life, even when you’re at your lowest.

And most of all, they can provide emotional and motivational support for people who aren’t lucky enough to find it elsewhere.

One popular misconception about 12-step programs is that they are solely a faith-based recovery program – if you don’t believe in a certain religion, you can’t be a part of these groups.

This, however, is not true. Each 12-step group blatantly states that they do not discriminate against or affiliate with any religion. Added to that, atheists and agnostics are just as welcome in these groups as anyone else.

What’s important for Anonymous groups is recovery, not just spirituality.

By far one of the most widely-known 12-step support groups, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is well-respected, widespread, and just a quick drive away from nearly every city in the country.

Alcoholics Anonymous

The group was founded in 1935 in Akron, Ohio. In just five years, membership grew from 2 to 1,400 members in 1940. Since then, it’s grown to serve more than 2 million recovering alcoholics around the world and had over 120 thousand different groups in 2017.

It's free to join AA, and there are no membership dues or requirements. All that's needed to be a part of Alcoholics Anonymous is a desire to control your drinking.

On top of that, the support members receive here can be absolutely life-changing.

Another 12-step group that’s gained global popularity, Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is focused more on addiction as a whole rather than any particular substance. Even alcoholics are welcome at these meetings despite the misconception that AA is for alcohol and NA is for drugs.

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous has more than 67 thousand weekly meetings that take place in 139 different countries. And just like AA, membership is free and completely anonymous.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any Narcotics Anonymous meetings that take place within Des Moines. However, just like Alcoholics Anonymous, NA groups in the Seattle Metropolitan Area are numerous and always close by.

Below are some of the closest meetings, each taking place within 10 miles of Des Moines.

Other Addiction Support Groups

12-step programs aren’t the only options for getting support during recovery. In fact, there are plenty of other national and local organizations that can help you maintain your sobriety.

Battlefield Addiction – A homegrown support community-based in Des Moines, Battlefield Addiction takes a straightforward approach to getting addicts the treatment they so desperately need. This organization helps empower parents and friends of substance abusers to take the necessary steps to get them help before it's too late.

SMART Recovery – A 12-Step alternative, SMART Recovery focuses on self-empowerment using proven strategies and techniques for overcoming addiction. Meetings are guided by a trained professional rather than by group members. However, these meetings are free, just like with AA and NA.

Secular Organizations for Sobriety (S.O.S.) – This group addresses addiction as a whole (similar to NA) without the spiritual bend that many people believe 12-step programs have. It is community-led and has been helping people overcome addiction for more than 30 years.

Moderation Management – Led by group members just like AA, Moderation Management is focused on serving beginning-stage problem drinkers rather than full-blown alcoholics. These groups offer a sensible behavioral change program using either full abstinence or moderation of alcohol consumption.

Choosing to Partner with a Professional Program

While support groups and education can be a valuable asset for fighting back against addiction, the overwhelming majority of drug or alcohol addicts are going to need professional treatment in order to truly recover.

These programs offer emotional and motivational support but also use proven therapies and treatments to help ensure the best chances of recovery. They also provide much-needed medical evaluation and treatment in case any complications should arise during detox or rehab.

Added to that, they can also provide special medications that can make withdrawals and cravings much more manageable or even entirely non-existent.

In general, there are 4 levels of care when it comes to treatment.

Detoxification – The first stage of recovery is often what’s known as detoxification. This is the process of letting the body get used to living without the help of addictive drugs like heroin, alcohol, or prescription pills. During this time, recovering addicts will experience a range of physical and psychological symptoms known as withdrawals.

These can end up being quite uncomfortable and often cause the substance abuser to turn back to using just to find relief from the symptoms.

With professional help, however, addiction specialists will provide treatment to reduce both the duration and intensity of these symptoms, making detox significantly easier to get through.

Inpatient Rehabilitation – The most intensive form of rehabilitation, inpatient care requires patients to stay on campus throughout the course of recovery. Programs are typically around 30 days long and offer an especially focused approach to treatment.

However, inpatient programs typically don’t allow patients to attend work or schooling since they usually can’t leave the campus without a chaperone. And for some, this degree of separation can be problematic.

That being said, it also allows patients to put 100% of their attention on recovery, giving them the best odds of getting sober for the long-term.

Outpatient Rehab – Outpatient rehabilitation offers a more flexible approach to recovery. Rather than spending all their time in the program, patients in an outpatient model attend several evening classes a week, each usually lasting several hours. These programs usually last for several months.

This allows patients to fulfill daily obligations like going to classes or a job without taking time off. Patients can also tend to family obligations as well.

With this added flexibility, however, comes a higher risk of relapsing since patients won’t be attended to 24/7. It’s for this reason that recovering addicts typically attend an outpatient program after getting out of an inpatient program.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – Balancing flexibility and intensity of care, intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) hold sessions several times a week in the evenings, but more frequently and for longer than a typical outpatient model.

This type of program is great for people who need extra attention but can’t afford the time needed to dedicate to an inpatient program.
