Guide to Addiction Resources in Connell, WA

Connell, Washington Overdose, Support, & Treatment Addiction Resources

About 40 min north of Kennewick, Connell is a small community in southeast Washington. And while its population hovers just around 5500, it is no stranger to big-city problems like addiction and substance abuse.

Unfortunately, though, many residents of this tight-knit town aren’t aware of the numerous addiction resources just around the corner. And that means that many people here simply don’t get the help they need to overcome their substance abuse problems.

This comprehensive guide to addiction resources around Connell, Washington takes a closer look at some of the best resources nearby.

From overdose help and local support groups to tips for finding a professional program, it’ll point out resources that can be a vital part of keeping residents safe, supported, and sober.

Local Support Groups Near Connell, Washington

Despite what many people unfortunately believe, overcoming addiction isn’t just about willpower.

Addicts aren’t lazy, unmotivated, or corrupted. They’re sick with a physical brain disease that makes it nearly impossible to change on their own. And in order to get clean, it takes professional treatment and an enormous amount of emotional and motivational support.

The problem for some, however, is actually finding this vital source of support.

Fortunately, local support groups are widely available and especially accessible. And in the Connell, Washington area, there are plenty to choose from. Below are some of the best nearby.

Founded in 1935 in Akron, Ohio, Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the most well-known support groups in the world. And since its founding, its membership has grown to nearly 2.1 million globally in 2017.

Its success is due in part to its accessibility. Membership is open to all, completely free, and anonymous. Another aspect of AA that makes it so popular is the fact that it’s built on the 12-step model – an approach to recovery endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Below are some of the closest meetings in the Connell area.

The 12-step approach to recovery founded by AA was so successful that it spawned a number of offshoots using this model to address other addictions. Narcotics Anonymous is one of the largest and most successful of these offshoots.

Unlike Alcoholics Anonymous, though, NA doesn’t focus on just one type of substance abuse. Instead, its doors are open to people suffering from any substance use disorder, whether it involves heroin, cocaine, meth, alcohol, or all of the above.

There are quite a few meetings happening nearby too.

Often times young people have a hard time embracing the support model of Al-Anon. They may feel uncomfortable sharing their experiences and, as a result, won’t be able to get the help they need to stay safe and healthy.

Alateen is a 12-step group devoted to tackling this problem in particular. Members are required to fall into specific age groups (usually determined by each individual group) so that all members are of similar ages. And that can make it significantly easier for them to open up about their struggles and their experiences.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any Alateen groups within 100 miles of Connell. However, you can check out their online meeting directory here to find more meetings nearby.

Like Al-Anon, Narcotics Anonymous also has a friends and family group. It’s called Nar-Anon. And it helps those who have been hurt by another person’s substance abuse, no matter what the substance is.

And like Al-Anon, some of the discussion topics that will likely be covered in these groups include:

Nar-Anon groups aren’t as easy to find as AA and NA groups. But even still, there is one in particular nearby to have a look at.

Not all support has to comes from a 12-step program. And in fact, some people may find that this model of recovery is incompatible with their own beliefs. Thankfully, there are a number of alternatives to choose from.

SMART Recovery is one of the most popular and most successful. This group teaches members a variety of techniques and strategies for staying clean – all based on verifiable scientific evidence. Groups are also led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.

While in-person support groups are a great way to stay connected and get help, not everyone will be able to attend. A busy schedule, a lack of transportation, embarrassment about being addicted – there is an endless number of reasons why making it to a face-to-face meeting can be tough.

But thankfully, there are other options. And online support groups are some of the most flexible.

These groups can take place over email, real-time chat, or even video conferencing. It just depends on the group.

But ultimately, they give people the chance to get support when it may have otherwise been unavailable.

Below are some of the best places to get started.

The Dangers of Overdosing

Addiction can devastate nearly every aspect of a person’s life. From their career and their finances to their social life and mental health, the consequences of this complex disease are broad and all-encompassing.

But one of the biggest dangers of a substance use disorder is to the physical health of an individual. And overdoses, which can lead to permanent damage and debilitation, are becoming more common and more deadly with each passing year.

In fact, 2017 saw over 70 thousand deaths caused by drug overdoses. And when you factor in the 6 alcohol poisoning deaths that happen each day in the United States, the death toll is staggering.

It’s never been more important than it is today to know exactly how to spot and treat an overdose should you encounter one.

Not all overdoses look exactly the same.

Below are some of the most common overdose symptoms for some of the most widely-abused drugs today.

HeroinAn especially dangerous illicit drug, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Prescription Opioids – These drugs are typically used to treat pain in patients. But they’re also highly addictive and quite dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Cocaine – One of Americas most widely-abused drugs, cocaine is powerful and dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on coke may include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin

Alcohol – Alcohol is both widely available and addictive. And when taken in excess, it can lead to serious health problems. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Crystal Meth – An exceptionally powerful stimulant, meth is as damaging as it is addictive. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Benzodiazepines – These drugs are usually prescribed for depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. But they can also be addictive and abused recreationally. Here are some benzo overdose signs to watch out for.

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

The first step of treating an overdose is getting expert help. An overdose is a serious medical condition, and only a professional is qualified to treat it properly. If you notice the signs of an overdose above, call 9-1-1 immediately.

The operator on the other end of the line will be able to instruct you in how to treat the victim while also sending an ambulance to your location.

If you do need to leave the side of the victim – even for a minute – be sure to put them into the recovery position. It only takes a few seconds to do, and it can prevent serious complications like choking and vomiting.

The operator will likely ask you a range of questions to get a better idea of the situation too. These questions may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What’s their current condition?
  • What drug caused the overdose and when was it last used?
  • Does the victim have a history of substance abuse?
  • Do they have a prescription for the drug?

Be sure to answer each question as honestly and accurately as possible.

They may also ask you to perform certain lifesaving actions like CPR or inducing vomiting.

Once the EMTs arrive, they'll take over treatment using special medications like naloxone as well as medical grade equipment. They’ll also likely transfer the victim to a hospital for more comprehensive care.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

Support is vital to recovery – that much is clear. But support alone often isn’t enough to help addicts get through the hardest stages of recovery.

That’s where professional addiction treatment comes in. These programs use evidence-based strategies, treatments, and therapies to give patients absolutely everything they’ll need to stay clean for good.

And without a professional program, many people will end up relapsing soon after trying to quit on their own.

In general, there are two main types of professional treatment programs: detoxification programs and rehabilitation programs.

Detoxification is the first step in a successful recovery plan. This stage deals exclusively with withdrawal – the difficult process of physical readjustment to a substance-free life.

As the body gets more and more used to an addictive substance, it begins to physically change to accommodate it. And when that substance is removed after the body has become physically dependent, it has to work to get back to the way it was before. This can often cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms called withdrawals.

Some of the most common withdrawals may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Many times these withdrawals can be so uncomfortable that recovering addicts end up relapsing just to get a bit of relief from the symptoms.

A professional detox program helps by treating the symptoms of withdrawal to make this necessary process much more comfortable. And as a result, patients are less likely to relapse.

A professional program will also prevent and treat serious complications that often occur during detoxification. And since some of these complications can actually be deadly, it’s usually not advisable to detox without professional help.

Rehabilitation is the stage that comes after detox. And while detoxification is concerned with the physical dependency of addiction, rehab is focused more on the mental side of it.

It uses one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapies to reverse the compulsive drug-seeking and self-destructive behaviors common in addicts.

There are three different types of rehab programs too.

  • InpatientInpatient programs offer the highest level of care. That’s because these programs require patients to actually stay at a program facility. That means they eat, sleep, and receive treatment all in the same centralized location. This allows for a more controlled environment, but it can also be a bit disruptive to daily life. They’re usually about 30 days long.
  • Outpatient – An outpatient program is a more flexible alternative. Patients in these programs are free to spend their nights and days as they wish while receiving treatment several times a week – usually in the evenings or on the weekends. However, this also may come with a higher risk of relapse too. They’re usually around 3 months long.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – These programs offer the flexibility of an outpatient program with the intensiveness of an inpatient program (to some degree). Treatments happen in the evenings but are often longer and occur more frequently throughout the week than typical outpatient. They’re also about 3 months long in most cases.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any addiction treatment programs near Connell. And for some, that may be disheartening.

However, the truth is that choosing to travel for treatment can actually be a huge benefit for recovery. That’s because doing so opens up the door to so many more programs. And that means that you have access to higher quality treatments, better amenities, and ultimately a better success rate than if you settle with nearby facilities.

There are a number of other benefits to consider too, though. Below are some of the most important.

  • May offer you different medications that aren’t offered in nearby programs.
  • Offers more privacy and confidentiality since there’s less of a chance of running into someone you know.
  • Helps solidify your commitment to recovery since its harder to quit
  • Lets you find facilities that have a better track record with your particular type of addiction
  • May help you find more comfortable amenities that can make recovery even easier
